What's VA, and is that why you got married?
Veteran's Administration. Disability pension. And yes, that vast sum was just too tempting for us to resist.
Cool. I would also have married for that
You have to declare up front if you want the money or ten chickens ever month.
$17.30/bird? How big are these chickens? :?

I've thought about if I would ever get married - and if I would, it certainly wouldn't be in any official or traditional way, no need for vows or speeches or rings or signing bits of paper - but just an awesome party in some special place, and time to share with someone I love.

I wrote this as a joke on a friend's facebook, but it's pretty much what I would want, with the right person.
...we will marry atop a mountain, overlooking an ocean, on a starry summer's night, - there will be a feast, and friends, and music, and dancing. But together we will lay back, with the cosmos soaring overhead, nothing between us and the galaxies, as the earth spins beneath us, a hundred million miles of space and stars, just you and me and the universe.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Ayaan and I didn't want a fancy-schmancy wedding, but the ceremony was something we agreed to have. Maiforpeace was the officiant and did a beautiful job. The setting was perfect, not a crucifix in sight, just a deer wading in the lake (which distracted our "official" photog :lay:) and a tree-covered hillside. Plus a brazillion friends watching on the Internet. :hugs:

There were emergency backup photogs. :tut:

I agree with Bella that there's a strong cultural inclination towards solidifying a relationship by making it official through marriage. Maybe it's not as strong an institution as it once was, but for many people there's still some innate drive to make it happen. On a more selfish level, there's some desire not just to marry someone, but to have the stability and companionship that comes with someone being legally married to you, if you see what I mean.

It's also an excuse to throw a party, and there are usually some economic benefits.

Marriage seems to be a stronger institution in America. I'm often amazed at how quickly people want to get married and how young!
There are no extra benefits to marriage in many European countries these days thanks to EU equal rights.
