A mite oversimplified and bitter-sounding, this! I don't know any parent who wants their kids around every moment of the day. And I send my child to school because a) I simply don't know enough to educate him, and I'd rather employ someone who has more expertise and experience in any given subject to do it, and b) I have to earn a living myself, that's just the reality and is no reflection on the love I feel for my kid.

I've seen shit teachers and fabulous teachers - as in any profession there are those who excel and those who barely skate along. But I know it's a tough, often thankless and hardly remunerative job that I could never do. Just being around kids, let alone in charge of dozens of them, and being expected to keep order, foster respect, AND teach them some of the facts and figures and ways of the world? :worried: It takes a better person than I.

1) Kids are a handy way to relieve stress. If you're tired of kicking the dog, kids are nice to have around for impromptu beatings.
2) You're lazy and can't be arsed to do things for yourself anymore, so it's nice to have a little step-n-fetch-it or two milling about.
3) You fucked up your own life so you wanna try and get it right a second time around (but will probably just fuck things up even worse this time).
4) You want to indoctrinate minions into your twisted way of thinking and then let them loose, infecting the world.
5) You need someone to help you with the hard parts in your video games. Oh, and to program your VCR and shit like that that you'll never be able to figure out on your own because you can't ever keep up on new technology no matter how simple.
6) They're something to keep the wife busy with, so she'll leave you the fuck alone.
7) Increase the white population because there's too many niggers (meaning anyone non-white in this case) in the world.
8) And, finally, the neighborhood pedo needs someone to molest.

I think that pretty much covers the reasons for having kids :coffee:

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Sending one's child to school is hardly having someone else raise them. Some people might make great home-school parents (good luck to them, and there's a small matter of earning a living) but often the child later feels regret at not having a normal socialisation experience.

Ah yes; thanks for mentioning the socialisation aspect, which I'd been going to and forgot. I wanted to put my child in day care for at least some part of the day for just that reason. It gets boring for children being stuck with just parents all the time (especially when there are no siblings)! In fact, when my son was in a school that offered after-school care (up to this past year) he'd often bemoan when I came too early because he liked being with his peers so much.

I wanted none. I was adamant. Then I changed my mind, just because. So I had one. I knew that one would be all I could manage. Mine was planned and wanted. No regrets.

That indeed were how mine happened...

I never particularly thought about having kids. My wife had been told by an incompetent doctor she was infertile, so neither did she...

Wrong!

Now they are here, I have 2 fine young men (17 and 27) with whom I can talk evolutionary theory, football and the sad, sad state of "young people's music"

Because they're freakin' awesome! Well, not all kids, but that's the fault of the parents. My kids on the other hand, are fabulous! I've just always known that I was going to be a Mom, it just felt right. I couldn't imagine my life without them, even before I had them.

Nah, it was getting knocked up.

See, it is really tough for anyone (especially a woman) to express that they don't care much for children. Because of the enormous social pressure, I think a certain, and large, percentage of those who would rather not, end up raising children.

There are definitely others who want to make babies and raise them. Two of my best friends fit this description. One of those used to get near the edge of tears when the frustration built about partners only wanting sex and not wanting to create a family. It was really tough for them.

How many people have had one, realize they didn't like it, then got rid of it? Could we have a show of hands, please?

How many of you have had abortions? How many of those have been proud of their decisions? (I don't really want to know, just to have that group think about the question)

I have had an abortion, as much as any man can, and I am pleased that we (the partner I had at the time and I) made that decision. I can't tell you how many ways it would have been wrong. It was indeed stressful and made me sad at the time, but I wouldn't change it.

I have and love children. (they arrive in a few days!!!) I would not do it again, and don't mind saying that it is too much work for me. If my partner decided that she wanted one, it might change my mind, or it might change my mind about my partnership. I love some kids. Some I think are worthless.

Someone earlier said that bad children were the fault of the parents or something....

Holy horseshit! That is SO not true. Some adults are loveable, some ore worthless (to you, or to me). Is there a magic age where they are responsible for who they are? Or is it just that we are supposed to love kids no matter what?

Unconditional love is horrible. From both sides.
