Which is worrying. Make's a fella glad they don't work at The Indie, given recent events. :smoke:
It has gotten ridiculously out of hand.

I think even Hari would agree that his career as an interviewer is over, but no one is suggesting that his other work, his very well researched articles and well formed opinion (which I often disagree with) is not beyond reproach. His interviews represented a tiny fraction of his work, he has held up his hands and admitted he was wrong, but it seems that he has made quite a few enemies and they won't be happy until his career and livelihood is flushed down the toilet.
Well, he's certainly not my enemy, but I don't think I'll be bothering to read his articles.
I don't see how you can separate the interviews with the rest. He's a writer of supposed fact, and he's been substituting fact with fiction. It simply taints all of his work.
If he was a butcher, and had been selling seriously contaminated chicken, you would hardly say that it was just the chicken, so no reason to stop buying his beef.

If I was the editor, I wouldn't want to have the rest of my paper under suspicion.
Honest mistakes are ok, and can be corrected, but deliberate invention on that scale is not what you buy a paper for.

ps I wonder who he borrowed the "life is fired at us point blank" quip from? or is it his own work? See, there's no way of telling.

Well, I'm sure he did the right thing, and made it clear who he took it from. If he's learn't his lesson.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

Nope. These things might be a habit, now? :smoke:

Johann Hari: A personal apology

I’ve written so many articles over the years laying bare and polemicising against the errors and idiocies of other people. This time, I am writing an article laying bare and polemicising against the errors and idiocies of myself. If you give it out, you have to take it. If you demand high standards of others, you have to be just as damning when you fail to uphold them yourself.

I did two wrong and stupid things. The first concerns some people I interviewed over the years. When I recorded and typed up any conversation, I found something odd: points that sounded perfectly clear when you heard them being spoken often don’t translate to the page. They can be quite confusing and unclear. When this happened, if the interviewee had made a similar point in their writing (or, much more rarely, when they were speaking to somebody else), I would use those words instead. At the time, I justified this to myself by saying I was giving the clearest possible representation of what the interviewee thought, in their most considered and clear words.

(continued)

Gone back to school - or writing a book? There is some hint of the night about his article.

Shock, horror. Journalist makes shit up. What is all the fuss about? :bored:
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Can we now get an apology from the Daily Mail regarding every single sentence in the entire newspaper, ever?
"I grow old … I grow old …
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled"

AND MERRY XMAS TO ONE AND All!
