Well, I wouldn't say that. The AK47 and its variants are highly accurate and the design is one of the most reliable in the world, not to mention easy and cheap to build. But a skilled handgun marksman has it over an unskilled AK user at close range.

It depends on what you consider a variant. A high quality weapon designed to high tolerances should be called something else
The AK-47's high mechanical tolerances results in a high reliability for working, but that variability leads to inaccuracies over distances. Plus the barrel vibrates like a mother. Very effective against unarmed civilians at close range though

Horseshit. The AK is as accurate as is necessary in an assault rifle, and it's effective on human-sized targets out to 600 meters, just like the M-16 is. Both are designed to be used as significantly shorter ranges in normal operations, generally less than 300 meters, and both will easily group inside 1moa (minute of angle) at those ranges, meaning inside 3 inches at 300 yards, which is sufficiently accurate to kill the enemy.

The AK-47, the real deal automatic assault rifle, is widely considered to be one of the finest, most effective and most reliable military weapons ever made.

Now, for long range accuracy, my personal favorite is the Sako TRG-42 in .338 Lapua Magnum, from Norway's neighbor, Finland. Shoots inside 1/2 MOA at any range out to 1500 meters. Shoots inside 1/4 MOA at ranges less than 500 meters. But it's a bolt-action sniper rifle, not an assault weapon. Of course my mantra is that if they are closer than 600 meters, they are too damned close and it's past time to shoot and move.

Intelligent people never do anything alone that can be done together or by getting someone who does it professionally for a living to do it.
Whether its negotiating a payrise (use a union) or shooting dead bad guys (get a gun trained policeman). It's why the loner in the end will never acheive anything as he will always be massively outnumbered by people who will work together to achieve their aims

Car doesnt work hire a mechanic, toilet doesnt work hire a plumber, neighbour might have a firearm get the police to arrest/shoot them.

Problem is, you can negotiate a pay raise at your leisure, hire a taxi to take you to work when your car is broken, and shit in your neighbor's toilet when yours has been clogged up by all the shit you spew, but when you need a firearm because your neighbor is determined to shoot you, you don't have the luxury of waiting for the police, as the occupants of that island in Norway discovered to their horror.

Either you are prepared to defend yourself or you're not, and there's no calling for a time-out. Adapt or die.

I feel reasonable safe with my neighbours they really are pretty average, but if one ever got hold of a gun and tried to shoot the other there is a fair chance the bullet will go through the shared wall and hit me. Thats why I don't want them getting hold of one

Why would the presence of guns on the island have caused him to reconsider? He was committed. Given his agenda, knowing if there were guns on the island would be valuable information to him--someone might shoot back, and he could appropriate them if opportunity presented.

I wonder if he had not been dressed as a policeman, if he had stepped on the island, rifle in hand in regular clothes, if more would have been alarmed sooner and been able to get away?

Oh no you get me wrong I'm suggesting that within minutes of being on that island in the guise of a police officer all those legally holding guns would have identified themselves and be the first ones shot . The killer would then have carried on just as he actually did with but with an extra gun or two .

I can do a lightbulb but not a light fitting (doing much more with electrical wiring without training could well be illegal in the UK). No to all the others never driven a car since passing my driving test far prefer to get a bus/train and read a book.

You pay for the AA (AAA? in the US) so you don't have to do such things.

Far better to specialise in your narrow area earn enough to pay for people who specialise in theirs ( if I end up on a desert island I'm well aware I'm screwed) but as I don't like going anywhere further than 200 m from a bus stop that seems a little unlikely
