Johann Hari suspended by Indy as accusations mount

While the Murdoch press has been grabbing all the headlines in the phone hacking scandal, another, less-reported, controversy over the ethics of British journalism came to a head yesterday as Johann Hari was suspended by the Independent for two months.

Hari's suspension follows the Independent's decision to launch an internal inquiry, headed by founding editor Andreas Whittam Smith, into two main accusations levelled at the interviewer and columnist over the past fortnight.

In honour of it's creator, these interviews should be called Joharis. ( I think ).

It's a shame he's an atheist, I would have loved to read his interview with Jesus.

My interview with Jesus. By Johann Hari. Aged 8

I shook hands with Jesus and he gave me a funny look. I later found out that he was a bit cross-eyed.
We sat, and I studied him in the dim light that found it’s way past the shutters of the glassless window. One of his disciples gave me a cup of water, which had a strong taste of excellent wine. “Jesus Christ !!, What have you put in this?” I asked.

He gave me a knowing wink, so I moved on.
It thought it might be a chance to pick his brains, so I explained about how I was in trouble for copying bits of other peoples’ work, and asked him what I should say to my critics. “Let he who is without sin caste the first stone” he replied decisively.
I explained that a lot of my fellow journalists were actually women, and that we had abandoned stoning. “You’re fuckin joking mate !!” he stuttered in an amazed voice. “It sounds like you’re a bunch of fuckin do-gooder Samaritans. Bastards, I hate em !!”

I started to ask him about heaven, when he shouted in a slurred voice “Can we have some more fuckin water in here? There’s people here getting sober!” and he slowly slid to one side, and started to snore.

I made my excuses and left.
But I’ll never forget the day I met the real Jesus. It’s true, it is !

His site is down and under interests on his FB page he's typed

"Life Is Fired at Us Point Blank"

Which is worrying. Make's a fella glad they don't work at The Indie, given recent events. :smoke:

It has gotten ridiculously out of hand.

I think even Hari would agree that his career as an interviewer is over, but no one is suggesting that his other work, his very well researched articles and well formed opinion (which I often disagree with) is not beyond reproach. His interviews represented a tiny fraction of his work, he has held up his hands and admitted he was wrong, but it seems that he has made quite a few enemies and they won't be happy until his career and livelihood is flushed down the toilet.

Well, he's certainly not my enemy, but I don't think I'll be bothering to read his articles.
I don't see how you can separate the interviews with the rest. He's a writer of supposed fact, and he's been substituting fact with fiction. It simply taints all of his work.
If he was a butcher, and had been selling seriously contaminated chicken, you would hardly say that it was just the chicken, so no reason to stop buying his beef.

If I was the editor, I wouldn't want to have the rest of my paper under suspicion.
Honest mistakes are ok, and can be corrected, but deliberate invention on that scale is not what you buy a paper for.

ps I wonder who he borrowed the "life is fired at us point blank" quip from? or is it his own work? See, there's no way of telling.
