For US History in college, we were to read Colonial newspapers (they were all on microfilm) and write a paper based on what we read. Some of my favorites were the gossip rags.

Earlier we heard that the sundaysun.co.uk and sundaysun.com domain names had been registered two days ago.

On Sunday????

Surely you jest.

The government must step in and prevent this closing to save those people's jobs.

The only jobs that will be lost will be those employees that they wanted rid of in any case. The rest will seamlessly move into their new jobs on the Sun On Sunday, which will conveniently be at the same fucking desks!

No no no.

THE SUN-day

The sun will be written as seen on "The Sun" then the day will be written aligned vertically from bottom to top besides the "N" in "Sun".

The 'Sun on Sunday' domain was registered two days ago. What does that say about 'managing the news'.

that they are likely enacting a contingency plan that was thought of long ago, in case just such a stinky morass of shit hit the fan.

The staff on the 2 papers were going to be merged anyway (plans well advanced) - this just another way of doing the same thing. Even if New International out of the Tabloid Sunday Market for a few months then it's small beer money. The upside is that they lose all the current NOTW staff and can (claim) a new start with no legacy issues.........what I have not seen mention of yet is whether News International will be standing behind any fines / judgements against the NOTW - of whether they will seek to hide behind limited liability and the NOTW by then having no assets / no business - no money.

I am also very curious to see how the US end works out - sounds a lot like intentional (and high level) money laundering and racketeering (police corruption) - probably some "wire fraud" in there as well (on TV it would be!) and as News Corp is listed in the US the SEC / FBI may well become interested. Easy to see things going to a Grand Jury - and the US has a way of making deals with folk to avoid 400 year sentences in exchange for testimony (not accepting a defence of "I was deliberately blind" helps)......and besides all that, a Class Action from Investors is not impossible...........what Murdoch has been desperate to avoid (and has been very successful so far) is anyone getting to court and giving evidence under oath, as then can't change the story as needed.

The editor at the time should be the one to take the fall, its not just journos losing their jobs at NoTW (though i see they will be "invited to apply for other posts"). Maybe Rupert wants to protect her because she knows where lots of the bodies are buried.

On BBC Newsnight just now, they were speculating about a different motive: That she is to be used as a "human shield" to protect young master Murdoch from the worst of the flak that is going to come his way. But as to how that would play out ...

I simply cannot believe that either Daddy or Baby Murdoch were unaware of what was going on.

Andy Coulson has been arrested now, so it looks like he is to be the scapegoat. It is a question of whether he dobs in Becky or Rupert... interesting times... :eddy:
