I think it's been getting worse. Watch Chris Morris' excellent satire The Day Today. It doesn't hold up well as satire any more because damn near every news outlet on TV is exactly like it, right down to the farcical nature of the reporting.

Regulations may well change as parliament sees a good opportunity to score some votes off the back of this. As for serious and respectable journalism, it already exists and everyone knows where to find it. The fact people actively seek out sensationalist trash suggests to me people don't want news, they want the Jeremy Kyle show in print form. With tits. And sport. The problem isn't necessarily the people who peddle this trash, it's the millions of brain-dead arseholes who make these rags profitable in the first place which are the problem.
