British nationalism

Post by Lozzer » Sun Jun 26, 2011 2:10 pm

I just don't understand it, particularly in that the feeling of 'nationalism' extends to the entire Union, as opposed to its central country of political origin: England. It ain't characterized by the will for sovereignty from the UK, but the EU, and it's really anti-immigrant and pro-hegemony. Consider the BNP: they're fantastically conservative, and obsessed with the notion of a British 'indigenous' population. They want to preserve British 'values', and our 'collective' Caucasoid, Anglo heritage. Yet our language is a melting pot of the spoken and written tongue of every people that has invaded and settled here, and the ancestors of our entire nation Norman. What is there to protect from 'cultural erosion'?

Britain / the UK does not really exist - it was just a political term to make the Scots, Welsh and Irish feel like they were not colonies of England (which they were / are).

My take on the BNP / English Nationalism thing is that it simply comes from a dawning realisation that no one actually represents the people. England has always been simply a city state (a one horse trick) - and nowadays that city is 80% foreign owned, controlled and populated. Obviously still have plenty of whitey yes men / quislings that appear on TV, but the rest of England is irrelevent.

It will all end badly.

I don't mind lots of foreign people, so long as I get to fuck some of them. Trouble is, this country is over-full.
The only reason they want more immigration is to keep the house prices up.
And that's bad, not good, in the long run.

Most people are looking for simple answers in a time of uncertainty. Their looking for a excuse to kick recent newcomers out and lower house prices - they want a football shirt and to know their supporting the best club. They don't want to face the true complexity of the situation and so are prey to rigth wing ideology. Harking after a lost golden age and associated mythos - the template is there but it only works because it is far older than the the third reich, it is a very old archetype. We'll see - too much complexity and hell itself will yield.

England politically doesnt exist and I'm far from convined that is any such thing as a seperate English culture to that of the rest of the UK. What is there that is particuarly English that doesnt apply to the rest of the UK, morris dancing?, cricket (a minority sport).

Complete indifference to religion is a bit stronger in England than the rest of the UK but not overwhelmingly (apart from Northern Ireland)

I see Nationalism as similar to religion in the sense of its solecistic aspect. Just as people should wonder why they happen to have been born into the 'true' religion and all the random billions who are of another religion are damned and doomed, so Nationalists are as egocentric in their attitude to their country. Of course there are practical aspects to how one views the country one lives in which end up in the political realm, but come to it - that applies to religion too.

EDL is more dangerous than the BNP. It is a true grassroots movement with a lot of growth potential as the economic situation spirals. I know these kind of people; those who say there is no indigenous English culture are forgetting how fast nationalism sprang-up out of the collapse of Yugoslavia. I would say the EDL are like the worst of the Serbs in a embryonic form. These are people grounded in pub-culture and they take their history lessons from a Saturday night brawl. Goodluck with ignoring them when their movement explodes onto the scene. :smoke:

With first past the post the EDL can be ignored politically and are just a police matter

Nationalism is excessive mostly vicarious pride in self identifying with a group defined by history and territory but being somehow special and separate from physical or temporal processes. It is a cherished but increasingly blurring childhood memory and those who identify with it become aggressive or defensive as it fades, because it is at it's essence, the fear of being part of nothing, of not being special.

Lots of people don't like to consider that thought.

@ Crumple. I think that might be a sub-fetish of certain groups rather than a rudiment.

Polish chicks are fucking hot.
Trouble is, this country is over-full.
It's a small country, we should encourage emigration.

And that's bad, not good, in the long run.
.
The middle class are big enough to drive house prices up. They've risen over 100% since the mid 90s, long before the polaks came here taking minimum wage jobs. You honestly think most immigrants will ever own a match box house here? I'm a second generation brit. The only hope of me ever owning property is if I move abroad. To quote the yanks: go figure.
