We should allow it as long as it's followed by "I'm just sayin"

That's it Laklak - into the pokey with you until you learn your sensitivities. Someone might be offended. You're inciting hatred with your "jokes."

Being afraid to speak your mind is worse than saying something completely offensive.
Nevertheless with rights come responsibilities, something we sometimes forget.
By all means voice your opinion, but remember that words can be weapons.
You have the right to insult, but is that a proper use of free speech.
Many are afraid to speak because of political correctness.
The road to Hell is indeed paved with good intentions.
Let us ditch P C and reclaim the English language.

Sure, sometimes insulting people is a proper use of free speech, like insulting Nazis and KKK folks. That's quite proper. And, insulting pedophile priests and insulting Islam. Very nice uses of free speech.surreptitious57 wrote:Being afraid to speak your mind is worse than saying something completely offensive.

Just make sure you're prepared to justify what you say to a panel of government experts, who will analyze whether you are engaging in legitimate criticism or whether you really intend to incite hatred. Bureaucrats are, of course, uniquely positioned to make such a determination, and vesting government bureaucrats with such power would not in the least be any threat to the right of free expression.Svartalf wrote:But it's my first amendment protected right to rail all I want against the KKK, and the Jews, and the brits, and the darkies, and the fascists, and the commies, and the religious, and the stupid and all the rest...

Besides, it's only a First Amendment right in the US, and I believe the Ratz servers are in the UK if I'm not mistaken, where it IS a crime to speak.Coito ergo sum wrote:Just make sure you're prepared to justify what you say to a panel of government experts, who will analyze whether you are engaging in legitimate criticism or whether you really intend to incite hatred. It's a legitimate question, but it's more of a legitimate LEGAL question for the owner of the site, who may face legal liability for hosting "hate speech."

Moved Irish/Yorkshire derail to here: http://rationalia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=28742
Will move it to the pub if it gets sillier.
If I moved any posts that should be in here, tough titty, do them again and quote stuff this time.

Re: Hate speech on Ratz. Should we tolerate it?
Quite true, which is why I only refer to "First Amendment" rights in the context of the US, but "free expression" is a fundamental human right. Every country in the world, including the US, from time to time, violates that right, IMHO. And, there are folks out there who advocate some right to be free from someone else's opinions in public discourse. I don't agree with those people.Seth wrote:Besides, it's only a First Amendment right in the US, and I believe the Ratz servers are in the UK if I'm not mistaken, where it IS a crime to speak.Coito ergo sum wrote:Just make sure you're prepared to justify what you say to a panel of government experts, who will analyze whether you are engaging in legitimate criticism or whether you really intend to incite hatred. One - the operators of this website can place whatever limits they want on the speech here, arbitrary or otherwise. However, I find private limitations on the content of speech on what is otherwise a relatively open forum to be a bit incongruous. So, while it's not my "right" to post on Rationalia, if asked my opinion, I would say that the widest possible amount of speech ought to be allowed. I do agree with some limits, however - personal attacks directly against other members of Ratz. I agree with that one for two reasons: (1) it's an easy to apply rule that can be more or less consistently and objectively imposed, and (2) personal attacks are almost always of little overall value to a "discussion" and amount to the forum equivalent of a room full of people cursing at each other. Other than personal attacks on other members, however, I can't see how making nasty comments about groups of people ought to get anyone's dander up. But, that's just my opinion, and if the operators of the website think otherwise, then so be it.

AINA Friday cited eyewitnesses as saying that the Muslim mob, dressed in white robes and long beards, chanted: "We will kill the priest, we will kill him and no one will prevent us."
One of their leaders was cited as saying they would "…cut him to pieces," AINA reported.
