Do you have a split internet personality?

Dr. Darryl Cross, a psychologist at Crossways Consulting, believes the anonymity of the Internet encourages split personalities. He noted that people have two personas: one driven by raw animal instinct, and another that's more conservative. The former kicks in online.

Everybody here has a picture of me and a link to my Facebook. Not exactly anonymous.

I've posted anonymously on /b/ and I ended up saying the same stuff I say here.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

The Net is best considered analogous to communication with disincarnate intelligences. As any neophyte would tell you. Do not invoke that which you have no facility to banish.

Not at all, though I conduct myself as I do with my better friends as opposed to the general public in regards to the kind of things I say.

A lot of people live repressed and contrived lives, the internet gives them release to pursue their ideal selves which is not a bad thing in moderation. Some have 'deep emotional wounds' from the traumas of life - they will split into their angel/demon halves along the line of the wound on the internet as in real life, remaining unaware without a expensive therapist. Coherence of self is not easy.

Yes. In real life I am very responsible and dedicated. On the internet I'm a wanker.

I expect I come across as a lot quieter and more reserved offline with people I don't know so well or haven't spent much time with - like at Notts - but once comfortable I'm pretty much the same as online, saying and doing retarded things and acting either like a hyperactive 3 yr old or a bitch in heat :? Meeting up with my old friends for the first time in ages the other day we were having conversations that would not have been out of place or character on here :dunno:

Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

I think I'm pretty much the same online as in person.

I'm pretty much the same in this real life as I am in the outside world, I'm afraid.

Actaually, one thing that most people at the various meets have said is that everyone here (or at RDF or TAF) is just the same as they are online. I still remember the first one, in Leicester in 2006, and it almost came as a surprise how similar everyone was to their online "persona", but by now we kinda take it for granted, I think.

Sure there are some trolls, here as much as elsewhere, but I think they're few and far between, really.
