She might have had the ideas mapped out well in advance, but not the finished articles. If she'd presented that last book for the age group she was aiming at to any British publisher, they'd have told her it was overwritten and to cut about 30000 words off it. It's going to take two films for the last book for goodness' sake.

Yeah. Half of the last book was spent with Angsty Potter and Helpful Hermione in a tent. Really moved the plot on that did.

Mind, the tent thing was okay in the penultimate film.

I thought the books got better as they went along, but I agree the last one was not up to par. It was still enjoyable, but a bit of a disappointment.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

The final battle between Voldemort and Harry was a moral battle, and Harry had to get himself into a state where he could win that fight. Everything that happened to him in Book Seven was to prepare him for that.Tigger wrote:Yeah. Half of the last book was spent with Angsty Potter and Helpful Hermione in a tent. One page of script runs about one minute on the screen. So a 765 page book should run at least 12.75 hours. More as scripts have much more than just the text, such as stage direction, etc. And why do you think the 18 yos couldn't handle that book? She might have had the ideas mapped out well in advance, but not the finished articles. Actually, discussing it is even less entertaining than the book was. It was ok, but meh on the whole for me. Glad you enjoyed the series.

oh, they could handle it alright, it's just that if she'd started the series with that book, rather than submitting it as a best selling author with an already waiting audience, any publisher would have told her to take a flying hike and to read classic young adult literature like Millenium rather than trying to be a softer and more emo Anne Rice.

Thank you for your opinion. I re-read it a few weeks ago in preparation for the final movie. I appreciated it more then than I did the first six or seven times I read it.Svartalf wrote:oh, they could handle it alright, it's just that if she'd started the series with that book, rather than submitting it as a best selling author with an already waiting audience, any publisher would have told her to take a flying hike and to read classic young adult literature like Millenium rather than trying to be a softer and more emo Anne Rice.

Man, there are things I've re read that many times if not more...
but harry potter would not be one of them, I even dread trying to take that one back up to finish it. (I do that, took me three tries for Lord of the Rings, but I liked it, I just became muddled at some point or just lacked the stamina)

I read half the first book. I just hated the infantile writing style, so I never read any more. I do love the films though.

Brenda was a children's librarian, and she made me read the books so she could argue with someone about them. The last three books, I bought two copies of the hardbacks so we didn't have to wait to start the arguments.devogue wrote:Gawdzilla wrote:Thank you for your opinion. I appreciate the fact that a single mother on the dole could pull off such a world-class feat. And the fact that she had the whole thing laid out before page one was written still blows my mind.
