The draw for the first round of the Carling Cup (League Cup) was made on Thursday 16 June 2011; read on to see the full draw.
The draw for the first round of the League Cup, also known as the Carling Cup, took place on Thursday 16 June 2011. The matches will be played on the week starting 8 August 2011 and will be played over a single leg. They will be evening matches, and each match will be decided that night, with extra time and penalty shoot-out if necessary.
Last season’s winners Birmingham City would normally be in this round but because they qualified for the Europa League they would not have enough slots in their calendar to play so they too have been given a bye to the third round. This means that for the first time since 2002/03 there will be a preliminary round, between the two sides promoted from the Conference – AFC Wimbledon and Crawley Town. This will take place at Crawley on 29 July 2011. The winner faces a trip to Crystal Palace in the first round
The first round is split into Northern and Southern sections, and was a seeded draw. The big game is the local Nottingham derby between Nottingham Forest and Notts County.
Another local game sees Leeds United host Bradford City. Brighton will have the pleasure of welcoming Gillingham, the team whose stadium they used to share.

League Cup History
Unlike the FA Cup, the League Cup is only open to teams in the top four divisions of English football. Some consider it a waste of time while others start taking it seriously as it nears its climax.

The trophy dates back to 1960-61 and in its early days entry was not compulsory, so a lot of top teams ignored it. It was only when the prize for winning included a place in the Uefa Cup for the following season that interest grew.
Since 1981, the rights to name the cup have been given to sponsors, and the first to take up that were the Milk Marketing Board and thus from 1981 to 1986 it was known as the Milk Cup. Since then, the trophy has been named after Littlewoods, Rumbelows, Coca-Cola and Worthington before the current sponsors named it the Carling Cup in 2003
