I find myself agreeing with Coito, for I think the second time this month. I should probably go and have a nice lie down...

It's like we don't even count in the context of the joke. I suspect you might find a better reception for them someplace where mediocrity and conformity are valued.

As far as have been observing, regarding gender roles the resemblance to so called "average population" among active ratz is - umm - slight. Existing, usually, but slight. Waaaayyyy more people here who would be labeled androgynous and/or bisexual and/or generally weird gender-wise than I bump into elsewhere.
And that's the way I like it...

Edit: Looking at the other comments: I'm not offended by these jokes - they don't pack enough of a punch for that. I do find them embarrassingly boring and unfunny, though. They make me cringe with Fremdscham. Which, when something is intended as a joke, is sort of counterproductive.
None of the above is intended to stop anyone from posting lame attempts at jokes (I've done my share and will) - just an evaluation of a certain genre of jokes from my POV.

At the risk of derailing this derailed derail into relative sensibleness, could that just be because we're more comfortable with publicising our sexuality?Ronja wrote:Robert_S wrote:Coito, what bothers me, and possibly others, about the gender stereotype jokes is that they tend to sorta de-legitimatize those of us who don't fit in to them.

But Geoff - surely you are not attempting to derail this thread into a serious discussion? Shame on you!Geoff wrote:At the risk of derailing this derailed derail into relative sensibleness, could that just be because we're more comfortable with publicising our sexuality?Ronja wrote:As far as have been observing, regarding gender roles the resemblance to so called "average population" among active ratz is - umm - slight. OK, this once:
1) To be comfortable publishing (various details / areas concerning) one's sexuality, I would guess that one needs to have become comfortable with one's sexuality to begin with.
2) Comfortable with oneself in some area of life often - but not always - translates into a tolerant attitude of others and their quirks in that area of life as well.
3) People who need to work on getting comfortable with their sexuality often - but not always - are somehow different from "The Norm" (the imago/mirage or normalcy, that is).
Ergo, I don't find it very strange that a group who were dumped from RDF.net Mark 1 (or was it Mark 0?) pretty specifically *because* they were open about things that Someone maybe was not so comfortable with discussing or having discussed, would present an "unusual" profile of interests and activities.
Meh, that^^ is so self-evident it is boring...

Yeah, but I meant publicise amongst ourselves, really, I should have been clearer. I'm not sure how many of us would be as free with our disclosures outside of ratz. I know my wife & I don't discuss our playtimes much outside of our circle of "like-minded" friends, and the same with my bisexuality.
That perhaps implies that there are lot more people in what are thought of as minority groups than the numbers would suggest.
Meh, I dunno...back to the diamonds...

How about this, how about you stop getting upset for the way some of us choose to participate in a thread and thinking that you need to tell us how to see things and how to think about them and how to be?Coito ergo sum wrote:Maybe the problem is one of self-esteem. Except I don't mind giving his posts the reception they deserve right here.
Nobody seems too concerned with "delegitimizing" Americans who don't fit the stereotype. Nobody seems too concerned with insulting Americans at all. Like Christians and Muslims - if we're offended or insulted - oh, well, tough fucking shit.

And, interestingly, you got upset about the the way I chose to participate in a thread. And, you appear to think that you need to tell me how to see things, and how to think about them and how to be. That is, after all, what you did: you didn't like what I posted, so you told me about it. All I did was respond to you.

My past post in this thread may have been harsh. It's not so much that I feel oppressed or offended. If you really want to, go ahead and keep posting that stuff. I can't stop you and wouldn't want to be able to.
I can stop you from posting it without knowing that to some of us, it fails utterly as humor.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Yeah, but I have found many things that people say here to fail utterly as humor. So what? I wouldn't expect everything I say to be funny, or to be funny to everyone. I doubt I'm unique in that. Plenty of people have found many different things I've posted hilariously funny. I started a thread about funny sexist advertisements. Some of them are insanely funny. Sure, they may be offensive or un-funny to some. But, so what?Robert_S wrote:My past post in this thread may have been harsh. It's not so much that I feel oppressed or offended. Perhaps I'll just review each thread, and then I'll make sure to chastise anyone that I think has failed utterly as humor. Let's be honest here - the reason THIS topic was chosen out of all the un-funny topics for folks to chime in about, is because THIS topic is the topic that happens to be dear to those complaining. It's a sacred cow.

I do really hate it when my son uses my tools without asking and loses the drill bits.
I think he is the one who lost the chuck.
