Being nihilistic myself, people often consider me miserable or joyless for not partaking in their pointless rituals and indulging in pre-proscribed "fun" activities, but what they don't seem to get is that I'm not miserable, I have a whale of a time laughing at the amount of meaningless effort they go to in order to claim they enjoy themselves as the gladly turn themselves into little exhibits of the Spectacle.

Don't spend too much time with nihilism. There is always coffee. And when you get really old, oatmeal, and going to the toilet daily.

Some people see nihilism in a negative light, I don't see it that way at all. :bored:

Being nihilistic doesn't mean you *have* to be a miserable twat, but it does mean you shouldn't really care. There being no intrinsic value in happiness, or anything. That said, I try to be happy, because... well, it's quite nice. Not logical, I know, but fuck it.

It depends on who you ask and when and where you ask them. For a great many of the living things on this planet, life really sucks and is painful, lonely and (if they're lucky) short.

Some of us have it pretty good though.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

About me: I am an intellectual, a member of the Outer Party, and I live in the ruins of London. I grew up in the post-Second World War UK, during the revolution and the civil war after which the Party assumed power. During the civil war, Ingsoc placed me in an orphanage for training and subsequent employment as a civil servant. I maintain a squalid existence, living in a one-room apartment, eating a subsistence diet of black bread and synthetic meals washed down with Victory-brand gin. I keep a journal of negative thoughts and opinions about the Party and Big Brother, which, if discovered by the Thought Police, will warrant death, so don't tell on me. I am fortunate, because the apartment I live in has an alcove, beside the telescreen, where it cannot see me, and so my thoughts remain private.

um, because it is spelled differently?
To the future or to the past, to a time when thought is free, when men are different from one another and do not live alone — to a time when truth exists and what is done cannot be undone: From the age of uniformity, from the age of solitude, from the age of Big Brother, from the age of doublethink — greetings!

Metaphysical and Mereological Nihilism are more my speed - existence doesn't exist, and anything we think we perceive is a misperception.

Well...if they enjoy it, and it's all pointless anyway, why would it matter that you're laughing at them? And, on what basis do you laugh at them, as their activities are no more or less pointless than yours? :ask:

Why should it have to matter to Audley that his/her laughter matters if it is all pointless anyway?

Apparently, the point of this thread is pointlessly pointing out the pointlessness of pointing out...
