But isn't talking about OT posts and thread derails OT and a derail?
Why not post them there in the first place, or PM the chitchat among yourselves?

I'd like to think this will be moved along with the rest.

Did you make this yourself?

The center one doesn't show anything to look at. Should have used one of the Weiner pics.
charlou wrote:And those posts are topical, how?
It was a humorous item designed to bring a little levity to the thread. No, I didn't make it myself, so the men/girls references are what came with the image. I don't have a cow over references to men/boys women/girls guys/gals. Any distinction between men and women based on sex is sexist, so logically there is nothing "better" about calling men men and women women, rather than boys or girls. Girls refer to men as "boyfriends" and men refer to women as "girlfriends," and women refer to female friends as girls and girlfriends. It's not a big deal to me, and I've never understood the angst about it.

Are the posts "topical?" Yes, in a tangential sort of way they were topical. The thread was originally about "free to be me childrearing." It morphed into a a discussion of the generalized notion of genetic differences vs. learned/cultural/environmental differences. Making jokes about those issues ought not to be any more taboo than making jokes about other things, and it happens all the time on many threads on Rationalia.

That being said - the rule is that threads ought to stay on-topic, and I have no beef with that in principle. If the moderators felt some posts were off-topic, then so be it. Move them, and we'll all survive just nicely.

There is a lot of overreaction to the "battle of the sexes" jokes. There is nothing at all wrong with discussing sex differences, both cultural and genetic, and there is nothing wrong with joking about them. It's just a taboo subject that people adopt as their personal pet peeve and so it's then considered "crossing the line." Joke about religion, faith, and myriad other subjects - all good, and people who are offended can go fuck themselves. Joke about something "I" take seriously, and it's hateful and over the line.

OK Coito, how much reaction would be adequate? IYO.

I react as I do for the reasons I have.
The terms used may mean nothing to you, but in some cases they do mean something to others. And when it means something to me I just might say so.

About jokes about men and women? No reaction other than to laugh if the joke is found to be funny is necessary. Moralizing about how inappropriate or offensive the jokes are is just plain silly. It's just a pet sacred cow. Anyone who doesn't care that, say, for example, religious folks get offended by ridicule of their sacred cows needs to understand that it all cuts both ways. You don't get your pet issue to be free of all comment and humor.

But aren't you advocating your own pet issue--that others are being ridiculous for taking issue with jokes etc?

Turns out there are red diamonds.
If I wanted red--and I do like red--I'd still pick garnets over diamonds.

Brown diamonds are unique as far as the brownish stones go. There are lots of red options. But only brown diamonds have the chocolate look. Other such stones are more smokey and I don't like them so much. There are brown garnets that look sort of rootbeerish.

Coito, what bothers me, and possibly others, about the gender stereotype jokes is that they tend to sorta de-legitimatize those of us who don't fit in to them.

It's like we don't even count in the context of the joke. I suspect you might find a better reception for them someplace where mediocrity and conformity are valued.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Well, the reality is that not every joke appeals to every person, nor will it ever. I am sure that you've made some comments or jokes that make certain persons (perhaps the religious, I don't know...) feel like they don't count, or that they are de-legitimized.

The reality is that people get their panties in a bunch over humor which bothers THEM in particular. Lots of humor bothers some people. Muslims probably are bothered by Mohammed jokes. Lots of Chinese might be bothered by "Confucius say.." jokes. Blondes might be bothered by blonde jokes. Various nationalities might be bothered by nationality jokes - like jokes about Canada or the US. Americans might be bothered about jokes about Americans (or 'merkins..). Christians may be bothered by jokes about Jesus or Mary or their God.

So, with all due respect, if you don't think it's funny, don't read the thread. Nobody is immune from having their sacred cow gored. It happens to everyone.

Maybe the problem is one of self-esteem. I mean, I don't conform to many of the jokes about Americans - I'm not fat, I'm not stupid - I'm very well educated, well-traveled, and I have a great deal of knowledge in the areas of world politics, foreign affairs, geography, history, current events, etc., things that Americans are stereotypically very stupid about. I don't, however, feel "de-legitimized" when people around here have made jokes about Americans and 'merkins. When folks make jokes about how everything we do and make is substandard, our sports are boring, our bodies are fat, our brains are slow, and all that, I understand that says nothing about me in particular. I fight back rhetorically with rants and retorts.

Nobody seems too concerned with "delegitimizing" Americans who don't fit the stereotype. Nobody seems too concerned with insulting Americans at all. Like Christians and Muslims - if we're offended or insulted - oh, well, tough fucking shit.

Well, it's not like you can see me groan and shake my head over the medium of a forum. That type of gender stuff if fucking annoying and it belongs on television so I only have to see it when I'm at someone else's house.
