Well it was not I think considered a racial slur - indeed most Brits would not have seen people from other ethnic groups - ever! Sensibilities around such issues only arose when we had to live together in good old 'multicultural' Britain.

Tis an old story this, if you check the piece filming started in 2008, so nigger was written out well before then and it comes up every so often for a bit of hrumping.

I think they should have bleeped it out, so people could speculate if the dog was called fucker or cunt.
