George Osborne plan isn't working, say top UK economists

Some of Britain's leading economists are warning the chancellor, George Osborne, that the economy is too fragile to withstand his drastic spending cuts and that he must draw up a plan B.

Experts, including two former Whitehall advisers and two signatories of last year's high-profile letter backing the Tories' cuts, have told the Observer that they have profound concerns about the direction of Treasury policy.

Since the chancellor laid out his plans to balance the books by the end of the parliament in his "emergency budget" a year ago, the outlook has deteriorated markedly. Growth has gone flat over the past six months and a slew of dismal data has raised fears that the UK could be sliding towards a double-dip recession, as the US recovery wanes and the Greek debt crisis rattles the eurozone.

Jonathan Portes, the director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, who until February was chief economist at the Cabinet Office, advising the prime minister, said: "You do not gain credibility by sticking to a strategy that isn't working."

They were indeed. A nod towards 'smaller government' and a signal to the new tyranny - the 'markets' that we were going to torture and debase ourselves to come into line with their requirements.

Does economics work ? I mean it seems to have little value in predicting anything I think it's as accurate as tarot cards but you can get a degree course .Why do economists have opinions not facts and results .

I have been following (casually) a debate on this. There seems to be reasonable consistency on the view that no - it does not, either as a predictor or modelling tool for economic activity or as a 'science'. There are conflicting views as to whether it is or is not by definition a science in fact.

It is art. It is the insight of the brave working with too little light in the dark of the future tense. What should this important area be replaced with? planned economy? pure anarchy? what?

Not all the blame, just the kicking they deserve.

Let's not confuse the art/pseudo science of economics with the economy itself. And of course there are a lot of economists who do mundane counting, measuring and doing sums. It is the predicting which they can't do right. The 'free market' does do remarkably well at that, though it hides the pain and suffering that goes along with it - for those ho fall by the wayside and so on.

There is a true story about a Russian bureaucrat who came to London shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union (along with its command/planned economy) in order to see how bakeries and bread distribution worked over here. He was given the guided tour of whatever kind and after visiting a few factories and bakeries is said to have asked 'But how do you know how many bakeries to build and plan'. He clearly had something to learn about free market economics.

UK free market economics?=four three supermarket chains=clone towns and clone cities with a few dozen franchises slicing the top 95% of the economy up between them. Something to learn, here as well. :smoke:

This isn't about Ozzy and family, is it?
"A philosopher is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn't there. A theologian is the man who finds it." ~ H. L. Mencken

"We ain't a sharp species. We kill each other over arguments about what happens when you die, then fail to see the fucking irony in that."

"It is useless for the sheep to pass resolutions in favor of vegetarianism while the wolf remains of a different opinion."
