Disguise yourself as an underprivileged black man and you could get a scholarship to Morehouse College. :hehe:

About me: Twoflower is the optimistic-but-naive tourist. He often runs into danger, being certain that nothing bad will happen to him since he is not involved. He also believes in the fundamental goodness of human nature and that all problems can be resolved, if all parties show good will and cooperate.

My mom told me if I was poor and black she would probably pay for my schooling.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

She became an institution in America. She was the 'girlfriend' that many lonely housewives replaced the soap opera with. Along the way those women came out with their sexual abuse stories, lost weight, got emotional and physical self help, starting reading again,...I think that's a good thing, and it certainly was an improvement over watching mindless soap operas.

Whether or not you like her, she has had a huge influence in our culture, and on the whole I would agree with Twofer that she has done a lot of good with her show and her billions.
I live in regional SA, so yep, I've watched her. I didn't say she was boring or stupid or didn't do any good, but my opinion stands. If you care to know why, it's more to do with the 'celebrity and sheeple' aspect ... in a nutshell.

The tv is off here and has been for some time.

Besides, this is a country that has Bill O'Reilly, Newt Gingrich, Nancy Grace, Geraldo Rivera and Glenn Beck on air. Oprah should be some way behind them on the shit list.

Many of whom couldn't accept them because they couldn't afford to pay the taxes.

And I don't think she pays for any of this stuff she gives away--the businesses give them as advertising.

My TV is always on but I don't watch it. It is a habit I got into as a kid, the TV is "company".

Yes, the businesses give them as advertising. But they wouldn't do so unless Oprah had built a show worth advertising on. And its hardly her fault if some of the people couldn't afford the taxes.

And is is hardly their fault that they couldn't afford the taxes and ended up with same old same old while others got a great gift. So, just what was accomplished by giving away cars?

Maybe it's snobbishness. I don't know. But I can only stand a couple of minutes of that crap.
If I'm boiling with irritation after a few seconds, is that snobbish, or just irritation?
I just feel that my brain is being insulted by it. That gets me angry very quickly.
It's all done to a formula, so it's not just shite, it's boring predictable shite.

To a man, that is. Women seem to find something in it that I can't see. Or maybe they don't mind being treated like idiots. I'm not saying that they ARE idiots. Just that maybe it doesn't bother them to be treated like idiots. They rise above it, I bite every time.
.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

She's a nice person I guess. I've watched a total of about an hour of her in bits and pieces over the years. I just wish she'd lay off the woo.

About the new cars, I'd have sold it and bought a nice used car and had enough left over to take a trip in it.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

But she didn't think about anything except how it would make her look, being oh so generous and all. It didn't matter that part of her audience would be left out. They were all used to enhance her image. Because some were able to take advantage doesn't change that.
