We could use the tether as a half-way point. Non violent criminals get the tether initially, and if they commit crimes while tethered, then they get upped to prison.

It puts you back to overcrowded prisons, since the prisons are mostly full of repeat offenders. We already give first time offenders probabion with little or no prison time.

How about an implant which exudes a substance that makes the person feel sick if he veers off approved pathways? He can go to and from work during certain hours, but if he tries to go somewhere else, then he winds up like like Little Alex in Clockwork Orange, retching on the ground all nauseous and with a pain in his Gulliver?

I imagine the people who object to overcrowding prisoners would object just as strongly to that solution.

China may have similar problems once things start to slide...although their peasant class appear to have larger prisons. Topologicaly equivalent situation - you'd expect that really given how the currencies are linked.

Cost of Australian Federal Police: approximately $90 per Australian per year. Cost of U.S. FBI: approximately $27 per U.S. resident per year. Looks like the U.S. system is considerably more efficient there.

I did not know that. Thanks. I wonder though if that is more to do with our smaller population then gross inefficiencies. We still need Feds in our embassies as well as teams ready to deploy across the world, same as America. We just don't have the tax base.

England, France and Germany. These are well placed to take full advantage of the coming global chaos. Without aviation fuel then seapower will again be pre-eminent, at least in the next few decades. And old geo-political realities will return. You can defend a long coast but that requires a large standing army. Ask the military strategists on here, Seth & Gawdzilla, what a return to a sea-power politics will mean?
