Actually, my ancestor at the Boyne was not part of the French troops.

and It's been my perception that the problems are not really about religion, it's just that each camp sided with a religion that has since served as a marker and an excuse, but the real problem lies deeper and is tied to ethnic groups.

You have to love your government when they make normal life impossible for their citizens just to accomodate a foreign power that they still have some territorial beef going on with.

"They" don't have any territorial beef with a foreign power anymore, courtesy of the Irish people voting (95% 'Yes') to change Articles 2 & 3 of the Irish constitution in 1999.

Much of the inconvenience is grounded in the reality that there is still a substantial minority that doesn't accept the democratically expressed will of the Irish people, and which is prepared to cause all sorts of trouble if allowed.

Applications from Irishmen to lick my Saxon arse will be considered in the order in which they are received.

Only to highlight the inconsistency of those who seem to have an eternal beef against British royalty. Not only was Cromwell a republican, but his actions in Ireland were chiefly concerned with suppressing Royalist strongholds. Oh, the irony ...

Dead. Killed by "true" Irish Republicans as I recall ...

EDIT:

SNAP!

Neatly ignoring that the republicanism of well over 400 years ago his hardly comparable with republicanism today. Mind you, neither is the monarchy of Charles I comparable to that of Elizabeth II, so I sit back and contemplate this post. It is the best one in this thread so far.

Well, I completely agree that it's an anachronistic institution in this day and age, but it's ultimately up to the British people to decide if they want to ditch the Royal family.

And not just the British, but any other country that has the British monarch as head of state. Now, about you Aussies ... :tea:

We have standards. The minimum requirements are:

A double-barrelled surname
A country house the size of a small factory
A family coat of arms and motto
An entry in Debrett's Peerage
Someone in the House of Lords

... otherwise, Clinton Huxley would be apoplectic. :hehe:
