CakeOrDeath persuaded me to go to a Gem. Rock and bead trade show. We've seen this sort of thing in fossil and tourist shops, but they are NOT cheap, as you pointed out. It was about 1/2 the normal price and CakeOrDeath is an awesome haggler!

Best guess I've seen is that burrowing reptiles became snakes to slide through the earth better. Snakes don't swim very well.
