The sheer hatred and stupidity of some people knows no bounds.
The Taliban are pretty despicable, too.

The Taliban emerged after the much broader tent of the anti-Soviet mujahedeen fell apart. Since then, the brave, freedom-loving Taliban and those resourceful, dedicated Al Qaeda fighters have been standing up against the horror of American imperialism, and now they've carried out a valiant attack against those who would ally themselves with the people who murdered that poor, defenseless, freedom-fighter Bin Laden, killed for no conceivable reason other than simple vengeance.
But the person I was referring to in the first sentance was Gawd.

If they hadn't murdered that guy in the Panshir we might not be Afghanistan today.

To the contrary, it's part of the Taliban campaign to destabilize the Pakistani government, and pressure the Pakistanis into withdrawing support for the U.S. in Afghanistan. It makes perfect sense as part of the Taliban's greater strategy against the U.S.

The connection to bin Laden is just window dressing.

So, they are getting revenge on America by blowing up fellow muslims? Seems to me that burning an American flag or burning an effigy of Pres. Obama would have made more of a statement.

Islamist fundies declared a war against the west in general and the US in particular. The west is fighting back and calls it a war against terrorism. If you think the US administration did not expect a reaction, you are pretty bloody stupid.
You are short sighted in your historic view. The conflict did not start with the Islamists, it started with the US invasion of Afghanistan and terrorizing the population.
You must be fucking kidding. A short list of Islamic terrorist attacks that preceded the invasion of Afghanistan:
  • 18 April 1983 - 1983 United States embassy bombing 63 killed, 120 wounded.
    23 October 1983 - 1983 Beirut barracks bombing 305 killed, 75 wounded.
26 February 1993 – World Trade Center bombing, New York City. 6 killed.
    13 March 1993 – 1993 Bombay bombings. Mumbai, India. 250 dead, 700 injured.
28 July 1994 – Buenos Aires, Argentina. Vehicle suicide bombing attack against AMIA building, the local Jewish community representation. 85 dead, more than 300 injured.
24 December 1994 – Air France Flight 8969 hijacking in Algiers by 3 members of Armed Islamic Group of Algeria and another terrorist. 7 killed including 4 hijackers.
    25 June 1996 – Khobar Towers bombing, 20 killed, 372 wounded.
17 November 1997 – Luxor attack, 6 armed Islamic terrorists attack tourists at Egypts famous Luxor Ruins. 68 foreign tourists killed.
14 February 1998 – Bombing in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. 13 bombs explode within a 12 km radius. 46 killed and over 200 injured.
7 August 1998 – 1998 United States embassy bombings in Tanzania and Kenya. 224 dead. 4000+ injured.
4 September 1999 – A series of bombing attacks in several cities of Russia, nearly 300 killed.
12 October 2000 – Attack on the USS cole in the Yemeni port of Aden.
11 September 2001 – 4 planes hijacked and crashed into World Trade Center and The Pentagon by 19 hijackers. Nearly 3000 dead.
The Taliban, Al Queada, and bin Laden came into existence in the American sponsored terrorization in Afghanistan starting in 1979 when the Americans thought to themselves that they must fight their conflict against the Soviets in someone else's backyard. 1979 predates all the retaliatory attacks you listed.

Ah, right. The conflict started before the USA invaded Afghanistan. Got it, thanks.

You never heard of the "Cold War" where the USA fought the Soviets by stirring up trouble in other countries and starting wars?

I have, but you said the conflict started with the US invasion of Afghanistan. The abbreviated list of killings done in the name of Islam preceded that event.

Stirring up shit in someone else's backyard and making another country fight a war for you is pretty tantamount to an invasion.

Selling Stingers to the mujahideen is not "tantamount to invasion".

Lol. So the Soviets invade Afghanistan, the U.S. and several other nations provide financial and hardware support to the resistance, and in your warped, twisted, version of reality, it's the U.S. doing the "stirring".

That may have a certain twisted logic, but it is a risky strategy. Both the Pakistan government and the Pakistani people could well become so revolted by the random slaughter that they actually step up the fight against the militant fundamentalists within...
