Ozymandias

by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822)

I met a traveler from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.

Shelley...

Overweening pride can occur via religious mania, as well as secular power...

I used to teach a senior poetry class. They were always a little weirded out that a physics teacher liked poetry...

well you wouldn't want to follow the moral values of the great romantics ... Which one left his sick wife and kids and then wrote her a letter telling her she was a bitch for standing in his way ?

I thought the same thing! Is that something that's often done by muslims? I mean tossing the dead at sea?

But even if they showed OBL's face in a coffin, it wouldn't matter, he looks like a thousand other rag heads . It has been a question to me for a long time, what is taking so long to catch him anyway.

On the other hand, his death just represents a bigger picture, he's not in power nor was he ever in power alone.
I find your tone to be racist. The term rag-head has racial connotations.

But then you would be white and in the right.
A retraction is fine. I don't hold grudges.

Read it in college... I've never been a fan of romantic poetry, fortunately the tests were about Shakespeare and Dickens.

I read somewhere today that burial at sea is considered an acceptable Islamic burial if there is fear that an enemy may dig up the body to mutilate it? I imagine that there would have been a massive potential for that to happen to Bin Laden!

Nice job Obama!

I am curious about something, though. In Obama's speech, he said he gave the order "today" (5/1) to carry out the mission which killed bin Laden. However, the reports say he was nailed a week ago or so and then they took time to do a DNA test. Anyone know which is supposed to be the correct version?

The burial at sea thing I think is a mistake, at least until they brought in some leading Islamic folks to view the corpse. Islamic law only requires a burial within 24 hours "if possible," and it also says to wrap him in certain cloths and bury him facing Mecca "if possible." Where there are extenuating circumstances, it doesn't have to be done. Here, there are extenuating circumstances, and frankly the burial rites should take a back seat to proving to the world that he's gone. But, what's done is done. Good riddance, and kudos to the Obama Administration for finally getting him.
