Talvisota-The Winter War. Damn.Finns kicked some Ruskie butt

Wow. This story really needs a much bigger spot in the history textbooks. Damn.

You can get the whole thing on Youtube, part by part, if you're interested. I'd recommend it. Wow. Makes "300" look tame.

Edit: What the heck. I'll make it easy for you.

I have a recent movie, but it has no English captions. The wife is reading the book it is based on in English. US version available at 125 min.

I was looking for a dowload source for that when I ran across the documentary. Still can't get a download source. :lay:

No kidding, though, I found part of the story a bit hard to swallow. There were 4 or 5 Germans found frozen, their throats slit, one with his sidearm drawn and unfired...and still standing. I mean, really. A corpse just can't freeze solid that fast. If it happened, it had to be a setup to demoralize the enemy, eh?

Two possible scenarios come to mind. First, "tall tales time". Second, he was killed, froze, and then stood up for propaganda purposes. Going from 98.6 to 0 does take some wee amount of time.

I have pix somewhere of the Eastern Front, including one of a guy sitting upright with one arm sticking outward and bent down, like he's got his arm over a tree limb. But no limb. Looking at the snow around him you can actually see glove prints where the snow had been tamped down after he was moved to that position from his original place of death.

Freezing to death is reportedly not a bad way to go. You feel cold, then you feel warm and go all floaty as your body shuts down. So seeing corpses in a "natural pose" was not impossible.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Psychological warfare. Good job, the Finns.

That's true. It was so pleasant for me that I very nearly chose to just go back to sleep instead of fighting my way back...

That's the trap of cold. Lots of people fall for it. "I'll just rest here for a moment." Then they find out they can't move any more. Then they don't care.

Finland sympathized with Germany in WW2, right? Germany supplied Finland with food and munitions up through the spring of 1944. Then cut Finland off when Finland tried to make a separate peace with the Soviets.

The Russian summer offensive in 1944 was actually coordinated with D-Day. So, Finland were the bad guys....lol  Britain declared war on Finland in 1941. LOL

The Finns got the Nazi military and food aid resumed pursuant to the Ryti-Ribbentropp Agreement in June 1944.

Without Nazi anti-tank weapons and air forces, the Finns may not have made out so well.

And, didn't the Finns actually lose territory in the Winter War? Then sought Nazi help in the Continuation War?
