"Your Highness", probably better stoned. It is a stoner movie despite being c. 1200 AD (in an alternate Earth, of course.)

I've just watched Changeling. Starring Angelina Jolie and directing by Clint Eastwood.
It's based on the Wineville Chicken Coop Murders.
I really enjoyed it. Quite a moving film.

I didn't hate it but it left me surprisingly unmoved. I love Jolie and I love Eastwood. And I love period piece films. But...it did nothing for me. I wanted to like it much more than I actually liked it.Gawdzilla wrote:Hated it.Deep Sea Isopod wrote:I've just watched Changeling. Starring Angelina Jolie and directing by Clint Eastwood.

But I think I'm jaded in my old age. It takes an awful lot to impress me these days.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

I saw Open Range this afternoon.
Loved the killing of the bad guys, awesome--that was some convincing killing and dying. Looked real.
And the production value alone made it worth watching.
It was set in Montana but filmed in Alberta.

I've just discovered I have an entire section on Bollywood films in my TV's on-demand choice. Anyone got any good recommendations?

I wanted to enjoy this film. I really, really did. But it was ruined for me by the worst 3-D experience I've ever had.
I couldn't make things out during the action scenes as the were dark and I was seeing double. Colours were drained, I found myself straining, I still have a strain ache around my eyes now. It was dreadful.
No one else seems to have this so I don't know if it was the fault of the cinema I was in or if my 3-D glasses I've had since Avatar are out of date (I notice the ones my nieces got recently for that Finding Nemo rip of with the turtles are different to mine) or maybe I need my eyes tested but it was really distracting and annoying.
It wasn't a bad film. It moved along a little too fast for my liking but I'd let that go seeing as it's a comic book film. I'd love to say it had great action but as the action parts were mainly a blur to me I can't say. It didn't take itself seriously, I mean, how could it? And Stan Lee was in with the awesome cameo as usual. It done everything right for a Marvel film.
Fuck my life.

Cool, gotta see it! Sounds like your glasses are wonky. They tweak the freqs for these movies, you were most likely a few angstroms off.

Re: More good movies we've seen.

Wow! I really loved this film. It's my fav film of 2011 so far.
The story takes place during the last days of the Shogunate in the 19th century. After years of relative peace the Shogun's younger brother, Lord Naritsugu, a sadistic and sociopathic thug who takes pleasure and enjoyment in torturing and killing people and making brutal examples of people threatens the future of Japan and peace between the Shoguns. His attitude to the caste system is one of complete and utter disrespect to all those considered below him. They are mere tools at his disposal.
Things begin to get worrisome for the local lords when, in protest, a leader of one of the servant classes commits hara-kiri in front of the Shogun's palace as a form of protest, the opening, gut-wrenching scene. One of the local lords, Sir Doi, decides it's time to hire a few assassins to take care of business.
13 such men are gathered under the leadership of Shinzaemon, a veteren ex-samurai of the Shogun.
The film is a slow-burner at the beginning as Shinzaemon gathers his men and listens to tales of Naritsugu's unmerciful brutality. Takashi Mike has never been one to shy away from graphic imagery and this film is no different but unlike Ichi the Killer or Audition he can't be accused of showing gore for the sake of shock value. The imagery is powerful and will remain with you after the film and it serves one purpose, to induce an emotional response of hatred towards the protagonist. You actually want this guy dead as much as any brutal dictator on earth today. The scenes could've been over the top but they were plausible and reminded me of The Last King of Scotland.
But not all the imagery was harrowing. There's lots of nice mountain forest scenery as the assassins trek across Japan to their destination to ambush Naritsugu.
And what an ambush it is followed by a 40 minute battle as the rest of the film gains momentum. The fight scenes were handled epicaly and stayed within credibility.
But in the end the story is about loyalty, honour and the greater good. It's a film worth watching. Just make sure you stay alert because it has the fastest subtitles I've seen in a movie so far
