More and more I am realising how important it is in science teaching to demonstrate real stuff, and let the students do hands-on stuff.
Got a great class of Year 10 science students. They still need to learn to study a little more effectively for tests, but they love their prac work...
This week, they put together a whole lot of different circuits, series and parallel, measured the voltage and current, and calculated the total resistance in each circuit.
Then I taught the basics of electromagnetism, and how electric motors work. Got the kids to come up and use an electromagnet, picking up nails, varying the voltage, feeling it get warm...
We had a model 6 volt DC motor, with no casing, so you could see the armature, the coils, and the little sparks from the brushes...
We haz fun!

Indeed! If nothing else, it's great motivation. One thing I learned whilst teaching people how to teach is that the teacher's role as motivator should underlie everything else the teacher does.
