Nuclear bomb tests help to identify fake whisky

Post by leo-rcc » Tue May 05, 2009 8:42 am

Bottles of vintage whisky can sell for thousands of pounds each, but industry experts claim the market has been flooded with fakes that purport to be several hundred years old but instead contain worthless spirit that was made just a few years ago.

Scientists have found, however, that minute levels of radioactive carbon absorbed by the barley as it grew before it was harvested to make the whisky can betray how old it is.

Neat! 8-) ... pun intended. :shifty:

This strengthens my case FOR nuclear proliferation. Finally, a little help from the "science" community.

Whiskey is overrated.

No such thing as "+1", that's an invention by the church.

Whiskey isn't overrated. It's overtaxed and overpriced.
Like all alcohol.

GOOD whiskey is overrated. It's only slightly nicer than cheap shit, but many times the price.

I just buy cheap shit, and add chocolate ice-cream. Magic !!
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

I wish that was true. At my tastings I always make a point to add in at least 2 cheaper whiskies, and while not bad they will never be on par with the more expensive ones. There are no Whisky connoisseurs at my tasting groups, just people who have a fondness for Whisky and a willingness to try everything at least once. Even the terrible ones.

Now there is a large variety in Whisky and Whiskey, so by no means does price determine quality, but if a bottle of whisky has become expensive it is usually because the rest of the batch has been consumed already, meaning it was a good year and bottled at the right time.

One of my favorite whiskies is a Gordon & MacPhail Aberfeldy from 1991, bottled in 2010 or 2011. There are only a few bottles left and the price for one has been rising steadily. Just basic supply and demand.

Nothing wrong with that, the cheaper Whiskies tend to be a lot softer in taste, making them much more suitable for cooking or adding to cola/ice/whatever. It tends not to dominate the flavour as much as for instance a Lagavulin would.
