What, if anything, do these lyrics mean?

Post by devogue » Fri Mar 11, 2011 3:04 pm

I want you... woman

Tried to be a son and daughter rolled into one
You said you'd equal any man for having your fun
Now didn't you feel suprised to find
The cap just didn't fit?
The world expects a man
To buckle down and to shovel shit
What'll you do for loving
When it's only just begun?
I want you to be a woman

Tried to be a teacher and a fisher of men
An equal people preacher
Will you lead us all the same?
Well I traveled all around the world
A brand new word for day
Watching the time mustn't linger behind
Pardon me I have to get away
What'll you think of heaven
If it's back from where you came?
I want you to be a woman

It's a song called Son and Daughter from Queen's first album - something about the feminist movement perhaps? :dunno:

I remember hearing Brian May say in an interview a long time ago that the feminist movement had gone too far...I think it's an attack on the feminist movement.
Atheists have always argued that this world is all that we have, and that our duty is to one another to make the very most and best of it. ~Christopher Hitchens~

I thought that as well - it's very strange.

Well, the Fairy Feller's Masterstroke describes a painting - so it does make sense.

The lyrics to March of the Black Queen, though...

Water babies singing in a lily pool delight
Blue powder monkeys playing in the dead of night
Here comes the Black Queen poking in the pile
Fi fo the Black Queen marching single file
Take this take that bring them down to size
March to the Black Queen

Put them in the cellar with the naughty boys
Little nigger sugar then a rub-a-dub-a-baby oil
Black on black on every finger nail and toe
We've only begun - begun

Is it about wanting God to be a woman?

Maybe from Jesus's perspective?

so close to annihilation.

Well there were plenty of references to Jesus in that album, even a song about him.

It might just mean Freddy was gay - although that's a little far-fetched, I know. :tea:

Well, there's a difference between wanting to have sex with men and wanting to be a woman. I mean, the band may have been called Queen, but Freddy was never all that fey.

While on tour Freddie caused a rent boy to prolapse in a gay brothel - he called out "This one's broke, get me another one!"

:hehe:

Perfect case in point-- that totally sounds like the response of a dude.

What about this then:

Sid Vicious (sneering): Alright, Fred? Still trying to bring ballet to the masses, are you?

Freddie: Ah, Mr. Ferocious, dear! Well, we're doing our best darling!

:funny: x infinity

I'll grant you that one. But it still sounds like he managed to put Sid in his place! Even without a prolapsed rectum.
