Making something that others are impressed with: food, a handmade card, my scrapbooks. It makes you feel great when you know that someone is in awe of something you have made.

Feeling creative, useful and helpful, preferably at the same time. Otherwise I feel stuck with lil' ol' me and my boundaries.

a) Sinking my teeth into a really fiddly bit of programming that includes a number of complex and elaborate sql statement, regular expressions or just creative uses of the language. Things like data mining for fun, screen scraping, merging of disparate web service results for a useful purpose, etc.

b) Because it's like a fantastic series of problem solving tasks that give me a wonderful sense of satisfaction and achievement when that "Hello World!" moment comes.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

I was only just home when I wrote it, didn't have the energy to think of anything else.

If I'd just spent 5 hours shagging, I don't think I'd have much else on the forefront of my thoughts, either. Like the OP says: no points deducted! and

5 hours shagging?

5 hours shitting with 4-4-2 magazine, a bucket of popcorn and pure grade warfarin to stop the bog-seat induced pins and needles beats that.

I'm dead serious about this: a really good, deep-cleansing, blood-pressure-dropping, spirit-uplifting, day-brightening shit is sometimes...hmmm...well...an acceptable substitute for 5 hours of sex, anyway.

1A) Creating art

1B) Because it allows me to change and/or reject this reality and create my own

2A) Doing things to make loved ones happy, laugh, etc

2B) Because my loved one's happiness and well being directly affects my own

3A) Performing random acts of kindness, especially if it is done anonymously

3B) Because… I dunno. It just feels good to do right for the sake of doing right
