Is this the saddest song ever written?
I love this song. I love Peggy Lee. This song can still bring tears to my eyes. It is one of the saddest songs I know..

Such a subjective measure. This one is close to the top of my list:
"A philosopher is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn't there. A theologian is the man who finds it." ~ H. L. Mencken
"We ain't a sharp species. We kill each other over arguments about what happens when you die, then fail to see the fucking irony in that."
"It is useless for the sheep to pass resolutions in favor of vegetarianism while the wolf remains of a different opinion."

I don't see how it's 'sad' (the OP)
I thought it was the opposite. It's message seems to be enjoy life.

Never much liked Peggy Lee, I find her hard to listten to. I can think of many sad songs that spring to mind, old blues is full of them, and bluegrass, folk etc, murder ballads, death, the depression... This is intensely sad for me, but I think you need to know the musicians there, the story and the significance.
Men! They're all beasts!
Yeah. But isn't it wonderful?

I agree. It is to me about enjoying life in the face of its futility. Sometimes the futility is hard to get past though...Animavore wrote:I don't see how it's 'sad' (the OP)I thought it was the opposite. It's message seems to be enjoy life.

I don't find it sad either for the same reasons Ani mentions...also, the melody is rather upbeat.Rum wrote:I agree. It is to me about enjoying life in the face of its futility. God, no. That's the kind of grief you should keep private, the kind that makes you write sugar-coated nastiness. Awful.devogue wrote:Tears in Heaven.
I'd say the saddest song is Blaze Foley's If I Could Only Fly

I have respect for Clapton but that song invites my eponymous smiley
