More good movies we've seen.

I thought this was a great movie.

It's about a spy named Wiesler who works for the Communist Government of East Germany who is sent to spy on an artist, a writer, to see if he's up to any anti-government activity.
Weisler ends up taking a liking to them and is moved by their poetry and music and ends up covering up for them when he realises the writer is writing articles about the government which are getting smuggled across the border to be published in magazines in West Germany.

The film is quite moving and the ending will leave you feeling warm inside.

I think this film got the Best Foreign Film Award at the Oscars on the year it was out.

Tron Legacy was OK, went to see it in IMAX. When I shelled out for tickets I wasn't expecting a nuanced plot and finely drawn characters. I was expecting to get fucked in the eyeballs. In the end I'd say that visually it was pretty good, in eyeball sex terms it wasn't a tantric weekend in a Bali hotel but it wasn't a drunken quicky in a pub car park either. Don't think that the 3D added anything to it in the same way the 3D added to Avatar.

Otherwise, just watched Black Swan, which was a nice cross between The Red Shoes and The Wrestler. It's proof that a film can be sensational and subtle at the same time.

Also got the restored Metropolis Blu Ray as a Christmas pressie, which I'm yet to watch. Need a quiet moment with no distractions for that one.

Les Revenants.

What an excellent film. I was intrigued the whole time, wondering what was going to happen. It was one of those foreign language films where you forget after a while that you're reading subtitles. I was really engrossed.

Bubba's Chili Parlour

I was recommended this by Bri. It's a retro grindcore zombie film. It's really cheesy, set in some hick nowhere place, with faux poor quality film effects and parody drive-in intermissions. The acting is mostly pretty good, considering, and the gore factor is as you'd expect it to be. I loved it. Cheers Bri.

I just got back from seeing The King's Speech. As a bit of a republican (read abolish monarchy, not political conservative Mericans!) I was not sure about going, but I had read such good reviews I thought I would take the risk.

It is a simply superb piece of film making, and particularly of acting.

If Colin Firth doesn't get Best Actor Oscar there is something very badly wrong. What a superb film!

I've been reading the first 'movies we've seen' thread ... Your reviews are great .. there are several films among them that I'd really like to see now

Just watched this slow moving film, Winter's Bone. About a young teenage girl from the backwoods of Missouri, her mother's catatonic and her dad gone done a runner from the law leaving her to look after her younger siblings. When the bondsman comes telling her in a week they're going to take the house because her father put the property up as security for the bond it's up to Ree to find her father. Her father cooks crack so this means she has to go visit some hard, pipe-hitting Hicks. The type that talk to their wives with slaps. One slap for "Yes" Two for, "Get me a beer". And hell you better not have me say, "No" to you.
The lead actress, the young Jennifer Lawrence, plays the part of the strong lead very well. She comes across as someone who is tough as a jockey's bollox. Probably, I imagine, the way Gallstones was at that age. She wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty, even skinning and gutting a squirrel at one point. Good support from John Hawkes and the rest of the cast who look like they've been pulled out of a Nascar tournament.
There's a lot here to relate to, especially if you're from the country. It may be a bit slow moving and humourless for some but well worth a watch for everyone else.

I watched Transylvania (2006) last night. It was a really engrossing and watchable film. It's only got 6.3/10 on IMDB, but I'd easily give it an 8.

I think I'm running out of zombie films to watch. I'll often check out a title I haven't heard of only to find that I've seen it but couldn't remember the title. :sighsm:

Edit - I think another problem is that I've been spoiled by 28 days and 28 weeks, which were both masterpieces of horror and panic, imo - I seriously doubt they will ever be surpassed. The best I've seen since has to be Colin.

Over the past month I've watched a few Serbian films: "Black Cat, White Cat", "A Serbian Film" and Underground. I also have a film called "No Man's Land" that I haven't seen for a few years. They all seem to have an edge of dark, surreal humour that infuses the whole story, snd it's something I'm really liking.
