It's crazy what's going on there! I've been reading some of the stories and it's far freakier than the mudslides in LA (which are still scary)

It's really freaky...
We had such an ice storm in Atlanta in the last two days, the highways were shut down.
I'm getting a stomach ache thinking about all of this... :sighsm: :sighsm:

Re: The Queensland floods.
The ABC TV here in Perth has given up on regular programming and just broadcasting full time flood updates even though we're on the opposite side of the country in the grip of a catastrophic drought. Sounds like Ipswich is going to be severely fucked tonight. I keep seeing images of flooding and evacuations in Caboolture, which is a worry because my Mum is in a nursing home there.
Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.

I can understand why houses are built on flood plains, in this tiny crowded country. But somewhere the size of Oz, why don't they pick higher ground? They must get rain, or they wouldn't have invented the dryzabone.

Re: The Queensland floods.
Most of us do live on higher ground. What there is of it. If you care to acquaint yourself with the continent's topography, you'll discover just how little "higher ground" there is. Apart from "The Great Dividing Range", which runs north to south quite closely along the east coast, there is fuck-all of it. The mean elevation of the entire continent is 200 metres. That doesn't leave a great scope for water to run off, and makes it exceedingly difficult for 20 million people to all congregate on flood-free ground. You may have a problem understanding the concept, but I am sure 150 million Bangladeshis won't.mistermack wrote:I can understand why houses are built on flood plains, in this tiny crowded country. Re: The Queensland floods.
I know I've just been watching the updates (our TVs in South Australia have also stopped normal programming to show constant updates) and its just crazy and mind blowing the scale of things. I saw a video of a house in fire because a fuel tank burst near it. There was just a patch of water which was flaming on the surface where the fuel had spilt.Millefleur wrote:First vid at top of page, pile o' cars![]()

Nah the deals will just get really really shitty and stingy in my experience.Seraph wrote:The price of tomatoes, potatoes, bananas and pot will quadruple nationwide.Trolldor wrote:It's an impressive flood, will have to wait and see what effects it will really have on QLD and Aust as a whole.
Where will all the cheap smack and coke from Asia get smuggled in from now?Faithfree wrote:We in Perth are already seeing that from the Carnarvon floods in WA about 2 weeks ago.Seraph wrote:The price of tomatoes, potatoes, bananas and pot will quadruple nationwide.Trolldor wrote:It's an impressive flood, will have to wait and see what effects it will really have on QLD and Aust as a whole.
I've being trying to avoid all this news coverage today its just truly depressing and that is no slight on those who are suffering its just it wears you down.

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

Just been checking out the pics. These floods are dreadful - hope the people recover soon. Aussies tend to be good at pulling together at least - we have more than our fair share of natural disasters it would seem...

Agreed. We're a tough bunch. We'll be alright in the end.nellikin wrote:Just been checking out the pics. These floods are dreadful - hope the people recover soon. Aussies tend to be good at pulling together at least - we have more than our fair share of natural disasters it would seem...

Bugger we're tough. We're stupid and proud.

The pictures of cars and boats getting crushed under the bridges in Brisbane must have been more media digestible than hundreds of bodies in Brazil .

Re: The Queensland floods.
The floods in Queensland have been, for the most part, a logistical nightmare than a tragedy - at least so far.

Apparently, a cyclone of the highest impetus grade (5) is heading towards North Queenslands, with the respective rainfalls that go with it.
