Re: The apocalypse?
Now it is a pandemic. Sweden took a hit. Where next? What's killing 'em? There's something new and spooky in the sky?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12118839
Dozens of dead birds have been found lying in a residential street in Sweden, days after thousands of birds fell to their deaths in the US.
Police in the town of Falkoeping have told Swedish media that between 50 and 100 jackdaws had died.
Some are said to have been hit by cars but others have no visible injuries.
Parallels have been drawn with the mysterious death of about 3,000 red-winged blackbirds in the US state of Arkansas on New Year's Eve.

Yay!
I think this is greatly fun! I may take in bets regarding the next species to victim and the location from fellow students.

Re: The apocalypse?
Just remember, that if the apocalypse ever does happen, it will be the christian fundies all safe and sound in their little bunkers.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Birds like the Red Wing Blackbird, who fly in flocks, play "follow my lead"\, and have poor eyesight, so all it will take is for the lead bird to become disorientated (maybe from a firework) and fly smack into the ground and the rest will follow. They concluded that the birds had suffered internal trauma.
This would also explain the internal injuries.

Re: The apocalypse?
The question is are these happening out of correlation with normal or a simple artifact of human observational hysteria whipped up by the media? I doubt if there s enough data to be 100% sure either way although I'm leading towards hysteria. Maybe someone should start keeping a count on these birds and see if their doing what the bees and amphibians are doing? There's only half as many swans in the local water compared with ten years ago. I think a lot of those hit the wind turbines and electricity wires, or eat leadweights from the fishing fraternity.Deep Sea Isopod wrote:Birds like the Red Wing Blackbird, who fly in flocks, play "follow my lead"\, and have poor eyesight, so all it will take is for the lead bird to become disorientated (maybe from a firework) and fly smack into the ground and the rest will follow. They concluded that the birds had suffered internal trauma.

The military haven't been frying the skies with some new toy have they? This article suggests the Military Industrial Complex might have a new gizmo and may be testing it out?

Still waiting for the rain of ex-parrots.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
