Light Sabers

I've never understood the practicality of light sabers. If you had the technology to produce beams of light capable of cutting through anything, you'd think you would have some kind of gun or projectile.

It always seemed silly that Star Wars fighters were thousands of years in the future and still swinging at each other like medieval knights.

It was never meant to be practical or sensible. It is just a way of flaunting your superiority to everyone. Like waving a dick in everyone's face.

"Hey, you can try to shoot me with your bad ass gun, but I'm going to fucking slice the charge/beam/ball of energy/bullet out of the air with A FUCKING SWORD. You're THAT slow and useless, you twat. Don't fuck with the fucking jedi!"

The jedis are basically cocky, overly self confident bastards, and they don't care who knows it. So their swords are just there as a huge middle finger to the rest of the universe.

What a devastating thing that would be, but I can imagine it being very possible in the future. How could you decide who gets it, and what could you do about overpopulation? The bad would outweigh the good. You'd have to keep it secret.

When I think of that question, I think of what technologies were developed by other organisms. Not consciously, as far as we can tell, except for a very few other species, like chimps and some cetaceans. I remember once putting together a big list, from farming to jet propulsion to powered flight.

I'd say nanotechnology -- organisms' most fundamental internal mechanisms are working examples of nanotechnology. If there is any big lesson to be learned from molecular biology, it's that.

If they did, we'd never see it, the star would be obscured. It would be truly awesome, however, a billion times the available space we have on this rock, all of which could be accessed by ground transport if you had the time.
