How to read more?

Post by Lozzer » Wed Dec 29, 2010 4:34 pm

I'd like to get back into reading again, but it's proving difficult. There's book I want to read, but I struggle keeping attention and consistently construing it. Tips?

Make sure you have three pillows in your bed, a hot water bottle, and a nice, low lit lamp beside your bed. Reading is so much nicer when you are cosy.

Take it with you when travelling etc.

Don't force yourself to read one book at a time, I always have several I'm reading in parallel.

My gin consumption rate increased slightly...

I take bloody ages to read anything at the moment. Even my favourite authors are not grabbing my attention.
I still have a load of Tattuchu's stuff to read, and it's pretty funny too, so I'm looking forward to it.

And Lozzer could start with that story I sent him ;ob; That one is pure comedy, and all about blow jobs!
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

No tips, sadly, because I have the same problem. I love to read but find it difficult to concentrate. I also can't read anything of length unless I'm lying in bed completely relaxed and with no distractions. Problem is, once I'm in bed, I tend to,um...fall asleep :(

I keep a book in the bathroom. Actually, several, plus magazines. It's time well spent.

As for your specific problem, dev, are you sure you want to read it? You may be struggling because it's not what you thought it would be or you got conned into "wanting" to read it by other people/media blitzing.

But I'm not one to talk. My personal reading has gone down ever since I first logged on to RDF.

Maybe this isn't the time to think about such things, with New Years resolutions still to be made and all...

Same decline here for me - that's why I signed up for the 50 book challenge this year, to shame myself into it.

Though I doubt I could do that even by shaming myself. I mentioned a decline in my "personal" reading. I didn't mention that I still earned my Masters over the past few years, or that I spend most of every workday devouring pages of information. So it's a bit natural that I find the idea of relaxing in the evening with a good book to be a little unappealing.

But I am thinking of shaming myself into exercising more, by announcing my intention to run the Marine Corps Marathon ten months from now... :eddy:
