Sherlock Holmes. Brilliant. Loads of fun, great acting, Downey surprisingly good as Holmes, great chemistry between Downey and Jude Law as Watson. Fresh and original whilst staying truer, ironically, to the original source material. Guy Ritchie is a genius. Well, except for that inexplicable bit about him marrying Madonna. But as far as this film...brilliant

The Matrix. I showed it to Felix, who loved it. I'd forgotten how good it is.

3:10 to Yuma. Great cast, wonderful acting, good story. Not entirely sure I bought the ending, but that's okay. Fresh take on the Western with, ironically, Brits taking the lead roles (though speaking in American accents). Both Russell Crowe and Christian Bale in top form.
The Thin Red Line. Very long and very boring war film. I knew it wasn't going to be an action film, and I don't have a problem with that at all. Still, there's a thin line between poetic and tiresome, and I'm afraid for me it crossed into the tedious. Reasonably well acted (except for Travolta) and reasonably well photographed. Still, in the end, it was all just meh.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Another slow going film but this one not boring. Beautifully shot, great cast and very well acted, and provoked more of an emotional involvement from me. Still, not quite sure what the film was trying to say. From the title, I expected James to be portrayed as a hero and Ford as the villain (and wondered how the film might convince me of that). That didn't seem to be the case. It was an interesting character study of both. I did feel we didn't get to know quite enough about either fellow, however. By the end of the film I wondered what I was meant to make of it, and I wondered what in fact I did make of it. I didn't like it as much as I wanted to like it, but still I liked it.

I thought The Thin Red Line was brill. I prefer it to most war films.

It was easily one of the most unrealistic war movies I've ever seen. The troops were throwing beer bottles at the screen before it was over.Animavore wrote:I thought The Thin Red Line was brill. I prefer it to most war films.

I thought it was better than Saving Private Ryan.

Better is subjective, so I'm fine with that.Animavore wrote:(oh well, in for a penny...)Gawdzilla wrote:It was easily one of the most unrealistic war movies I've ever seen. Re: So.... Seen Any Good Movies Lately?
I wasn't expecting it to be realistic or anything. I was expecting, from Terrence Malick, something moving, poetic, beautiful (in its own way). But the narration was just a lot of bollocks. I didn't even know what the characters were trying to say. And...they....said.....it......so.......slowlyrachelbean wrote:Thin Red Line is one of my favorite films of all-time

There was a thread for Blood and Sand where it received high praise indeed.
