Are our kids just pig ignorant!?

Post by Rum » Tue Dec 14, 2010 8:37 am

If my hypothesis is right it isn't the kids I am blaming, but the education system - in this country anyway. Listen to this!

I was driving my mom and my daughter (she is 21) over the Pennines towards Newcastle from Cumbria, i.e. due east. We started talking about the lay of the land and I said I could draw a map of the world from memory more or less.

My daughter, who is average academically, though no genius as you will see asked me if we were travelling west what would be the first place we would come to. America I replied a bit puzzled that she didn't know. And its the Pacific Ocean first, she asked?

I am buying her an inflatable globe for Christmas and suing her secondary school in the new year. :nono:

Its a good job I love her dearly and she is a wonderful person in most respects. :sighsm:

I think surveys show that an awful lot of people, of whatever nationality, can't even locate their own country on a map. I find that plain weird but then I love maps...

The Mini-Huxley's have two world maps on the wall and a globe and I get them to remember a country every week. If they get it wrong, I lock them in the garage.

Too strict?

It might be better if you have a cellar of some sort. Gives a more dungeony feel

Let us think the unthinkable, let us do the undoable, let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

I can find most things on a globe no problem, I might get stuck with Bolivia!

I hated geography, dropped it at 14 and seriously paid little attention up to that point. Geography lessons bored the crap out of me! You can lead a horse to water......

I'm more interested now but it's come from interest in peoples and cultures and how location impacts on that, also history. I'm not sure how i'll sell it to munchkin as fun but I kind of hope I find a way.

I'm not sure I get on with truly swotty kids, the ones that pay attention beyond their own fancy just because. I reckon i'd like you daughter muchly.

I quite agree!

Maths, science, geography, expressing oneself in one's native language and woodwork!

Fuck all the rest!
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?

Blame the National Curriculum and the previous government's target setting removing the ability of teachers to do what they were trained to do, and sapping their will.

What does any of this have to do with pig knowledge :dunno:

(I've always had a strange love for globes and maps so I don't relate, but your daughter is pretty normal it seems)

The story of humanity is the story of geography, largely. You'd think it could be made interesting but I remember some very dreary stuff about ox-bow lakes and glacial moraines that was enough to put anyone off.

We need more charismatic geography teachers....

See, my geography teachers wore lots of courdrouy and smelt vaguely of despair.

If your friend Sarah wants to run those ox-bow lakes past me, thats fine.

Actually, I think you probably have to come to an appreciation of maps via personal interest and need...

Whereas quadratic equations need to be either conveyed to eager students by a brilliant, charismatic, bearded teacher, or beaten into young minds, whichever is appropriate...

Rum, what is your daughter good at? Music? Art? English? Cooking? Science? Languages?
