Death penalty? All the best countries are doing it these days - The US, Iran, Iraq, China. Should string a few buggers up here too.

Actually the death penalty does reduce over-all instances of a crime being comitted, just as harsher sentencing does. The law serves its purpose as a deterrent.

An additional argument for capital punishment in this thread (mainly Gawd, I think) was a rather strange argument that keeping prisoners in jail for a very long time was cruel; he emphasised "being stuck in tiny boxes". FFS, in western countries, most long-term jail inmates have TVs, exercise periods, relatively comfortable cells, adequate if boring food, and social contact. We're not talking solitary confinement here.

And does this really seem like a suitable punishment for someone who has committed murder?

Try them, convict them, and shoot them. End of problem. If a few innocents die in the process then so be it, because crime rates will decrease if you know that within a month of being convicted of murder, you too will be dead.

I don't know if crime rates would drop significantly, but I sure would sleep better at night.

What if one of the 'few innocents' was a loved one, or YOU?! :sighsm:

Then I'd die protesting my innocence, but it's a chance I'd be willing to take, wrongful convictions for murder aren't all that common here.

Okay. Someone you love who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and was wrongfully convicted. I know I'm banging on, but it's actually THE POINT!! Wrongful arrest, forced confessions etc - the legal process is VERY flawed. There's your loved one in the dock. They're going to the 'chair', and you know they didn't do it. How does it feel now?
