Chilean Police Cruelly Topple a Beverage Cart

Post by JQisAwesome » Mon Dec 13, 2010 3:37 pm

Police officers in Chile topple a woman's beverage cart and it's caught on video. Notice how the woman and surrounding people put up little protest. That alone says a lot about the reputation of these supposed public defenders.

What's the story behind this?

Has the look of a "you don't have a licence to be here, so we'll just make the pavement sticky for you" event. Strange...

I can't seem to find an English explanation. Perhaps she didn't have a permit, didn't pay a bribe? Who knows?

No matter what her infraction, you don't just topple someone's livelihood into the street.

That someone filmed it, and judging by the lack of reaction from the lady, it would appear that the police action was expected.

Indeed. What would you call that, passive violence? It is a form of police brutality.

Yes, weird.

Not to criticize the backbone of the Chilean people, but if this had happened in America, that policeman wouldn't have made it down the block. There would have been an absolute shitstorm - both online as the video propagated - but also in the street when it happened.

Americans don't put up with tyranny and bullshit while South American countries seem accustomed to it.

Without an understanding of the culture, how that society functions etc. and a bit more background info, I simply don't know what to make of it. It doesn't seem particularly aggressive at all. But it seems like it was expected, which seems rather odd to me, since I wouldn't have expected it at all. :dunno:
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

It's got a "this happens every time because I don't have a licence" exposé feel about it.

Police get away with worse all the time in the U.S. Granted if they are caught on youtube, there's usually a bit of outcry.

At least they didn't tase the cart 8 times.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."
