Actually, it is - Aesop's fable of the frogs - they were living just happily enough with no worries but for no reason they became dissatisfied and wished to Zeus for a king, right? So Zeus sent them one and it ultimately devoured them?Gawdzilla wrote:That's not what that means.Coito ergo sum wrote:Well, I am not of the mind that my "wishes" have any impact on reality.Gawdzilla wrote:Be careful what you wish for.

But - anyway -
In the case of Korea - I realize that there is great danger in any course of action taken - I just see greater long term danger in letting the DPRK criminals get away with this....they need to have their balls put in a vice, somehow.

2 dead and 18 wounded versus 6.5 billion people on earth, most of whom would die in a full-on nuclear conflict...
I'd say a lot?
Tone down the rhetoric people. Proportional response is difficult here because NK is on such a power trip that we know that we're not going for proportional response, we have to go for blitzkrieg. And it's not yet justified to perform a blitzkrieg.
In closing, the shells fired, if larger artillery shells, have between 12-15 kg of explosives within them. With 18, that adds up to almost 300 kg of explosives.
The B-1 Lancer can carry 56,000 kg of explosives. We have 66, as well as 85 of the slightly smaller but no less deadly B-52 Stratofortress.

Be careful with your wishes. They can be granted.

It's not about wishes becoming real, it's about unintended consequences. One guy in my team once said, "I wish it wasn't so boring." Shortly after I had my finger in his femoral artery, trying to stop the bleeding. He didn't wish for a major wound.Coito ergo sum wrote:Explain it to me, genius.

Yeah - Aesop's fable...the frog's wishes became real (they got a king), but with unintended consequences (being eaten)....exactly my understanding.Gawdzilla wrote:It's not about wishes becoming real, it's about unintended consequences. First of, this is not the first conflict that NK started, and usually it is just some ploy to get some kind of peace offering from South Korea and/or the US (usually oil or some other commodity). So making it seem like it's only about this shelling is a total misrepresentation.
Secondly, There is no way that Russia or China will retaliate on a large scale. On that note chances that the US will do this on North Korea is very unlikely.
Thirdly, trying to get some argument from emotion from me by posting pictures about the horrors of war will not work. I've studied far to many wars both in text and graphic detail to be swayed by this. North Korea will push this too far one day and then the shit will hit the fan. The question is, how much more is needed.

We'd need more than 2 dead and 18 wounded. Much more.
We could have never dealt with Castro without war, but he's dead and we never fought. We could never deal with Soviet Russia without war, yet they're gone and we never fought. We could never have stopped Augusto Pinochet and he's dead and gone, and no war was fought. Stop Myanmar? Aung San Suu Kyi is free again. We'll see how it goes, but we're on the path to fixing it.
Total war is not a path we will possibly enjoy. I'm not saying don't push back, but don't start a war - it's not inevitable, and no one wins.

Note the presence of two different borders, in green and orange on your figure.Coito ergo sum wrote:
The Korean War cease fire determined an agreed demarcation line on land, but not at sea. The green line is the U.S. and South Korea's unilateral demarcation line at sea, enforced by superior naval forces. The orange line is North Korea's unilateral demarcation line.
As far as North Korea is concerned, they are shelling North Korean territory occupied by the South in violation of the cease fire.
North Korea's position is not very realistic in practice, but it's not as simple as "North Korea violating the armistice by firing on South Korean territory."
It's definitely not worth going to all out war over. In war there are no winners.
