All the unconventional characters here are either kooks or new age freaks. We need some intelligent, underground people. I hate this place.

My ex-husband used to refer to himself as a "Satanist". His idea of "Satanism" was simply the worship of one’s self. To live life doing whatever it is that one enjoyed without needing to consider anyone else (unless one so chose to). I don’t know how accurate an interpretation of “Satanism” his was, but it made him happy and he was still less irritating than many Christians I knew at the time.

The selfish aspect of his “beliefs” is what killed the marriage though. :ddpan:

That's definitely a common interpretation of Satanism, if one views Satan as representative of human nature and of one's self. In my opinion, nothing is more important than myself, and if I care for someone, then their happiness is tantamount to mine; hence, Satanism will enforce altruistic behaviour.

Yep, a far more honest and pragmatic way of viewing things.

More honest than what? The Christian impossibility of loving everyone? One of LaVey's tenets is about not wasting love on those who don't deserve it (i.e. everyone you don't know) but focusing on loving those few who deserve it.

For some reason this reminds me of Ayn Rand's way of thinking; I liked Atlas Shrugged when I read it but she made the same mistake that Kant made, she assumed that everyone was capable of rational thought.

I never read Rand, so I can't really respond. All I know is that when people I care for suffer, I suffer, so to alleviate my suffering, I alleviate theirs.
