I lied. I forgot about The Wrath of Khan... which is starting now
All the movies on film 4 this weekend, 6 and 8 are about the only other watchable ones, unless you like San Fran in the 80's.
The one with the whales? I used to love that as a kid.

They're a bit ropey to look at now. I lolled a few times at this one. It's not over yet though.

It was funny when Spock said, "The laws of logic dictate that the the need of the many outweigh the needs of a few" Logic fail!
Philosophical imperatives of moral precepts have nothing to do with "logic".
You must be watching on +1, 3 is on now.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

Is #5 really as bad as everyone says? Should I waste my time watching even this one time to confirm how crap it is? :shifty:

I'll take that under advisement. :eddy:

I'll record it and watch it "later", if I'm ever in a particularly masochistic mood. :coffee:

#5 tied #3 for second worst box office. ($17 mill.) #2 made $11 mill. :coffee:

I actually want to watch it, precisely because of its evil reputation. I'm curious as to why it hardly ever seems to be shown on TV, but I think I'm going to find out the reasons.

In the end we found out that all that jumping around was God's fault, he was having what's-his-name clean up the messes. :fp: (Stupid, beyond stupid, but it must have been the only ending they could find for that lame show.)
Also, God is a bartender.
Now that last one is actually a bit believable, even.

I've just watched #5, and ... it wasn't quite as awful as I had been led to believe :shifty:. But I plead the following in mitigation:

* I wasn't expecting much, based on the near-universal bad press.

* I don't expect much from Star Trek flicks in general - they hardly represent the pinnacle of the cinematic art form. :levi:

* Star Trek - both the TV series and some of the previous movies - are stiff with "supernatural" elements (far, far too much IMHO). What's so special about a run-of-the mill "entity" that couldn't even get off of its own planet under its own steam? C'mon, what were you expecting?

Having said all of that, I don't think I'll be watching it again any time soon. :coffee:

The worst parts of 5 aren't even the whole 'god' thing, it's the bloody awful plot, jaded dialogue, and all-round failure of the elements to work as a cohesive movie.

The planet of galactic peace is a lift of tatooine, spock's evil half-brother is taken from any one of a thousand stories, the campfire in the wilderness eating beans is from a western, the jailbreak is the same, the list is endless.

There was practically nothing original in the entire movie. The only scene worth a mention in the entire movie is the one after the jailbreak, Scotty's encounter with the bulkhead after uttering "I know this ship like the back of my hand". 8 seconds in a 2 hour movie.

Yup, I got all of those as well and more besides, including the Waltons reference during the campfire scene. Maybe with a bit more money (or a lot more), they could have produced a much more polished effort. How much that would have mattered ... maybe not at all.

it seems Shatner can direct about as well as he can sing. :drama:

Star Trek can't compete with Space 1999. Bernard Cribbins as a malevolent washing machine? It's what Sunday afternoons were made for.

Sorry klr, but you're simply wrong. Nothing wrong with being wrong, of course. But you are just wrong in this case.

It was one of the worst films ever made. Why no one was held accountable is beyond me. It's almost like Bloody Sunday.

Here in Ireland, they showed Space 1999 on weekday afternoons, just after school.

And then they cancelled the show.

Nope, I can think of a very long list of candidates for that, and I've probably seen only a fraction of the films you've seen.

Remember, I didn't say it was good. I just it wasn't quite as atrocious as it has been made out to be (which isn't saying much). There's a big difference ... :eddy:

I also made sure not to waste the time completely, so I did something else while watching it.
