I wonder if Mandy has read the koran in arabic. From everything I've been reading, you haven't read the koran until you've read it in the original language. Seems a translation into another language isn't really considered the koran - it's okay to use to convert people with, but once they become muslims, they should start learning to read the koran in the original arabic, which is the only true koran.

To maintain tighter control on the information or just that the thing sounds fuckin' silly in English?

The usual given reason is that it's poetic, metaphorical language that is difficult to translate. I suppose that means it's even difficult to understand properly in Arabic too.

That is the usual reason - plus, the koran in the original language is supposed to be an exact copy of the one in heaven.
