If you are interested in chemistry at all, there is intersting work in
I think it is branch of materials science. There may be some animal work, but you would leave it to doctors to do human studies.Materials (e.g. biomimeic materials, bio-compatible materials)

I've done some nanotech research in the past, it is just cool sounding bog standard chemistry, physics and biology.

Meh, not excited by nanotech as much as I am with bionic stuff...though I bet somehow, someway, nanoism will overlap with my chosen prof.
