Watch that again, then think about the "wing" turrets on HMS Dreadnought firing directly ahead. The muzzle blast would have wiped out the bridge crew.Ian wrote:

I love those old "Dreadnought"-style battleships. When were they first prevalent? 1890s? When did we transition from "Ironclads" to "Dreadnoughts"? It's a real shame that no strategy video game that I know of has featured them in any way. I could see a very cool Strategy game focusing on the technology and times from 1850, when "ships of the line" were still king to 1920s when the Dreadnoughts started dying out. Land warfare changed dramatically during this time too. Too bad no game that I'm aware of takes advantage of such a dynamic time in military and political history!

Dreadnought was launched in 1905, after only one year in construction. The RN was shitin'-and-getin' because the Americans, among others were working on "all big gun" warships.eXcommunicate wrote:I love those old "Dreadnought"-style battleships. 1905: Britain launches the HMS Dreadnought. Built with heavier armor, more powerful engines and greater main-gun firepower, she instantly rendered every other battleship in the world obsolete (including the rest of the Royal Navy).eXcommunicate wrote:I love those old "Dreadnought"-style battleships. What did ships prior to the HMS Dreadnought look like? We have the Ironclads in the 1860 and 1870s, but what about 1880s-1905?

This is the last British built "pre-Dreadnought", HMS Lord Nelson.eXcommunicate wrote:What did ships prior to the HMS Dreadnought look like? We have the Ironclads in the 1860 and 1870s, but what about 1880s-1905?
This class carried "intermediate caliber batteries", for use against the enemy when they got close enough. Turned out they weren't going to get "close enough", modern naval battles would be fought at great range.
