Respect

Post by AnInconvenientScotsman » Thu Sep 02, 2010 3:54 pm

We're always told to respect other cultures these days, especially when it comes to religion and the middle-east.

I was wondering, at what point would you abandon respect for another culture? At the point when others are being denied their rights? When one group in that society adopts clothing, jobs or behaviour we would see as demeaning, even if they they adopt those characteristics willingly?

Also, do you think it is right for us to 'respect' cultures incompatible with our own, within our own country? I strongly believe that the onus is on immigrants to adopt the moral and ethical standards, in addition to the philosophical ideals, that characterise our culture, not the other way round as some would like to have us think.
When I feel sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead.

Dear good all seeing being; my way or the highway Yahweh,

I thank your holy might, for making me both rich and white"

You can only respect culture as far as it remains within the law. After that, their actions are free to criticise.

NOBODY gets my respect automatically. You earn, you get it. Otherwise, "tolerance" is the best you get.

Tolerance is..

Fuck you Gawd, had this post all written out, pressed submit, you come in with the exact same punch line I had.
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

The other day a workman was putting up signs around my son's primary school. There were quiet zones and noisy zones, but there were also "instructional" signs, like "Invite someone who is on their own to join in!" :awesome: and "If you get into an argument, always be the first to say 'sorry'" :awesome: (I don't know where to start on that one). The one that stopped me was "Respect all adults" :awesome: .

It struck me that there's a world of difference between "Respect all adults" and "Be respectful towards school staff" which is what I suspect it was trying to say. And now it's on the outside wall of the school.

What law? A lot of laws are arbitrary.

I can respect individuals from any culture but I find it impossible to respect any culture. :tea:

I always hated the generally accepted idea that you should respect all old people.... because they're old. I remember realising that they might be 70, but they could have been a burglar, murderer or rapist. People earn respect, there's no other way. You can obviously give them the benefit of the doubt and almost respect them by default, but any hint of arse-ness and benefit of the doubt should vanish (IMO).
