CCTV

Post by Feral_Punctuation » Sun Aug 29, 2010 9:59 pm

Well, not strictly CCTV.

In England there often seems to be a fuss about how wherever we go we're being watched by security cameras. I don't think it's as much of a problem elsewhere, but still, there wasn't a topic on it so I thought I'd make one.

How would you best balance privacy with security? Do CCTV cameras even help catch criminals? If you've got nothing to hide, why would you object to being filmed?

Now, I know you guys don't like serious threads, but they are good for you!

No cctv does not reduce crime , we have had an explosion of CCtv in the UK ,has crime dropped ?

The next person that says (or paraphrases )" Nothing to hide nothing to fear" should learn where that quote comes from !!

How about I object to being photographed or filmed ? , how about I secretly film every bit of your life ? would you like that ?

I'm not advocating any particular position, the questions were just questions to get discussion started.
Here's another one:
Is the increasing amount of surveillance a slippery slope (to more surveillance, or anything really)?

Feck, I'll play devil's advocate. I'd say that yours was a bad analogy because CCTV doesn't film people in private.
Then I'd say there might be many things you object to that happen in public and if CCTV cameras catch criminals in just a relative few crimes then isn't it worth it? And could you actually rebut the "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" argument, please?

Sorry about my wandering eye, Bella ;)

I sit on the Youth Offending management board representing my organization and as it happens we looked into this issue about a year ago. There is actually some evidence that CCTV does reduce crime, though not significantly. It tends to send it to places where there isn't CCTV for example. It does however reduce things like assault in public areas where it is present. There is lots of research but if you are interested in a summary of some of it here is a Home Office paper which might get you started. (it is quite old now and there is newer stuff around).

Personally I don't mind it around the place, but I also have some sympathy for those who take the view it is an infringement of personal liberty.
