European Football 2010/11

Post by AnInconvenientScotsman » Thu Aug 26, 2010 6:11 pm

The Champions League groups were drawn today.

Group A
Inter Milan, Werder Bremen, Tottenham, FC Twente

Group B
Lyon, Benfica, Schalke, Hapoel Tel-Aviv

Group C
Manchester United, Valencia, Rangers, Bursaspor

Group D
Barcelona, Panathinaikos, FC Copenhagen, Rubin Kazan

Group E
Bayern Munich, AS Roma, Basel, CFR Cluj

Group F
Chelsea, Marseille, Spartak Moscow, Zilina

Group G
AC Milan, Real Madrid, Ajax, Auxerre

Group H
Arsenal, Shakhtar Donetsk, Braga, Partizan Belgrade

Group G will be interesting to watch, though Madrid should make it through comfortably; maybe they'll even make it past the Last 16 this year, with Mourinho in charge.

Tottenham got a good chance of the playoffs with that group.

I'd like to say they could even make the last 16 but my head says no. Inter might not have Mourinho any more but they're still a good side and the defending champions, whilst Bremen have went from strength to strength in recent years.

Celtic didn't even make the group stages of the Europa league. :mutley:

Which is probably why she went unnoticed among a crowd of Christians.

Even after selling Ozil to Real Madrid, Werder Bremen look like a very good side, although they were almost knocked out by Sampdoria on Wednesday. Spurs just don't cut it for me as a serious Champion's League side yet, but they might still get out of the group. You just don't know how Inter will react with Rafa in charge. :?

Speaking of which, you've got to wonder how Real Madrid and José will get on together ... :demon:

Severe mentality problem on the night. There's no doubt we had the quality to beat Utrecht, as we totally dominated the home leg, but a mix of bad luck and a shite attitude were our undoing.

My my... Barcelona certainly look set to rape their way to the last 16. What a weak group. And Arsenal shouldn't have much trouble either... Thankfully I can say the same for Manchester United, unless we have a shocker.

Although IIRC from the highlights, it was a bit of a lucky win.

The circumstances of the win don't make any difference - it's just as likely to happen this time round.

Just as likely... which is to say unlikely, if you'd take a cue from anybody who knows football... odds are a side like that gets smashed at the Camp Nou...

Credit where it's due, odd things happen, yes yes yes....... but Barca are going through to the last 16 in that group... I'll put my house on that one.

Obviously they'll make the Last 16, but they won't 'rape' their way through the group.

Back in the Champions League: Barcelona are giving Panathanaikos a footballing lesson at the Nou Camp. The Greeks scored with the their first (and only) attempt on goal, but it's 3-1 to Barca at half-time, and could be anything. Seven of the Barca line-up started the World Cup final for Spain, and then there's this Lionel Messi chap as well ... two goals already, and another shot off the crossbar.
