jesus h christ, 4 town specials, 3 scum, 10 players. zigmen plz stay here and remove ur game from TR

The game was ridiculously stacked in town's favor. 3 scum isnt an advantage when theres so many specials dean. With 3 vanilla only, its easy for everyone to out and scum cannot possibly win because theres no room to hide. this was the problem with one of barts games way back where nearly everyone was a special. it means of the remaining few doc + vig + lynch can take out all the scum in quick succession without any chance, and forces scum into a corner (more of them, the easier to hit).

gg scum, you did well given how crap the setup was. theres no pleasure 4 me in a win where i couldnt lose.

Some good points, gandalf... must keep them in mind ...

I enjoyed the game regardless, and I'm grateful to Zigmen for helping turn things around when they were looking pretty dire for ratz mafia. May the recovery continue

Zigmen, what do you think about the points gandalf raised?

I think he has made some valid points. This was the first game I have ever run.

When i was designing this game, I had to make a few decisions. I had 10 players and wanted a balanced game. I struggled with the idea of running 2/8 or 3/7 Scum versus Town.

A 2 scum team seemed too easy to defeat. 3 scum seemed to powerful. I weighed the options, and what swayed me was the fact that i wanted to keep the game enjoyable. I also wanted some interesting roles for players to experiment with.

So, I went with a 3 scum team and initially figured Seer, Doc, and Vig to balance it out. Then I decided to give the scum team a Don, and I balanced that with Ghat's role of The Bomb. The Bomb is a Mafia role that kills the attacker in the event of The Bomb being lynched or NKed.

Scum very nearly won this game early on. With the early votes on Charlou on day three, they nearly won again.

To me, one of the key plays was Twinkie the Seer getting taken out on night 1.Twinkie had wisely viewed Sifaka and was told she was town. If Twinkie had lived, Sifaka could have been "cleared" and made a real mess for Town.

Mafia is largely a crapshoot, so it's hard to balance, but again, i favored more enjoyable, intriguing roles.

Also, if Scum had hit Ghat, one of them would have been killed on the spot. That was a huge disadvantage for scum. It never happened, so it had no effect on the game.

The safer build might have been 2 scum and fewer specials, but I don't think it would have been a smarter build.

With only 10 players, the game risks losing players with dull gameplay. I chose to try to make it interesting with more specials, a good spattering of flavor, and a higher risk factor for both teams.

And, as I have already stated, I apologised that some folks may feel that their team had it too easy or too hard. Since complaints on that front seem minimal, I can only guess that most of you took that apology to heart.

This was how I defined Mini Mafia:
Mini Mafia is a very small Mafia game. If they grow, that's great too. I'll be running them for now with the hope that we can keep up some momentum of gameplay here at Rationalia. Signups will be short. The games will be short. They will be difficult to balance, so please excuse me if they seem too hard or too easy for your team. But worry not, another game will be coming very shortly.

Also, I for one prefer flavour over bland.

Hi guys.

Thanks for the game, fellow players and especially Zigmen!

It was great to meet the new guys (i.e. Sifaka, Ghat, Charlou, Twinkie, FP and Feck) - hope to see more of you in future :D

UT and MZ :td:

As for the game, I thought it was really well-balanced. Up till day 3 when I was lynched it was pretty much anyone's game. If any of you non-Ratskep guys follow the RatSkep games you would've noticed that you can get a clear indication which scum team (and usually the ones that can recruit) is gonna win by end of day 2. This is the first game in a loooong time where town has won.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

You're right, if I'd survived the first night, I'd have thought Sifaka was town and played my game accordingly. Things would have got messy :awesome:
