live music

Post by JOZeldenrust » Wed Mar 11, 2009 6:08 pm

Well, TAF seems to have died completely, so I'll just move my favorite topic, live music, here. Cont'd from here: http://thinkingaloudforum.com/forum/vie ... =17&t=2648
JOZeldenrust wrote:Woohoo! Just booked my first gig ever. On Tuesday March 10th, Krista Detor will perform at Willemeen, with support from Mary Had a Little Band. It's ridiculously short notice, but Krista Detor is an Americana singer/songwriter, and that happens to be the genre where I can reach a lot of potential customers on very short notice: I lurk around all the same sites they do, and I know some of them from other gigs.

Willemeen never put out so much publicity on a single day. I'm actually kinda proud.
This was amazing in so many ways. The venue lost some money (around 250 euros) but we reached a largely new audience, even if there were only thirteen of them, plus three on the guest list and a couple of volunteers. We also got some potentially very good recordings of the entire concert, courtesy of the sound technician who tipped me off on this gig.

The evening was wonderful. The atmosphere was very relaxed. Krista Detor and her husband and guitarist, David, were happy to have a place to play and pay for another night in a bed, and we were very happy to get the chance to hear her play. But over the last few days I had the chance to to keep up with her MySpace page a little more closely, and I had noticed some pretty interesting stuff:

Her MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/kristadetor
This is us: http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuse ... d=53915302
This is her gig next Thursday: http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuse ... d=53915302
This is her gig the week after that: http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuse ... d=53915302
And the 27th on BBC radio 4: http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuse ... d=53915302

Not only is she a vocal Darwinist, she and her husband are generally wonderful, smart, inquisitive people. They decided to stay for a bit after the show, and have a chat with the audience and staff. Though the concert ended at 10:45, and the bar closed at 11:15, Krista, David, three out of five people from the opening act, four staff members and a friend of mine were still having very interesting conversations about an astonishingly broad range of subjects - evolutionary biology, the attitude of the Dutch toward the German occupying force in WWII, the origin of capitalism, Indiana turning blue, the differences between the Dutch and the American education system, etc. - until well after midnight, when one of my colleagues remembered that march 11th is my birthday. It had been mentioned off and on throughout last week, but I had forgotten about it myself, so when I came back from locking up the vault, I was welcomed with "Happy Birthday", and I got a copy of the new album.

At 01:45, only staff remained. We had the last few beers in the crate and cleaned up the joint. This was quite a big chore because I had used the kitchen to cook dinner for the acts + entourage (Turkish: Iskender kofte and falafel, quite a hit), eleven people total. Around 04:00 we were finally done. Everything was shut, locked and closed, cleaned or checked. Earliest I've locked up the place so far.

My next concert will be the Zombies in Manchester in April. After that, the only thing I have booked is the Zappa Plays Zappa tour in June and Planet Gong in November. I keep an eye out locally though - we get some great smaller acts in Nottingham.

Saw the Monads yesterday. It was a great show, very energetic. They even had some eye candy with their female standing bass player. Women playing instruments taller then themselves are HOT!

Got the CD (and a promo CD from their label, and two buttons, and a sticker, thrown in with any purchase of a CD or t-shirt).

It were the Messer Chups today, which makes eight bands/singer-songwriters in ten days. A Russian surf-rock band. Mad as bloody hatters. I missed the opening act (not unusual on sundays), but the main act was great on its own. And they had porn!

Next week will be a bit slower. The week after that will be packed again, though: ska on friday, and indie hiphop on sunday, with a family birthday stuck in between on saturday.

Ska on the 27th was fun. The opening act (Ad Lib) was decent, but not really my cup of tea. Too much reggae, not enough punk. The Palookas were much better. The birthday party was quite fun as well. We went to see a kabuki play adapted for marionettes. It was a bit awkward at times, but overall very beautiful and intriguing. The hiphop thing (though I generally dislike hiphop) was very cool, though not quite as epic as Astronautalis, last month. Ancient Mith, the main act, had some strong lyrics, and was generally a great showman.

I'm going to the finale of the Gelders Singer-Songwriter Festival tonight. Should be fun. No plans yet for tomorrow. I don't think I'l be doing anything special. Sunday I'll be seeing UNearthly Trance, Ramesses & Serpent Cult. Could be interesting.

I have season tickets to the San Francisco Symphony, so I get to hear some pretty awesome classical music fairly regularly.

I'm going to see John Prine at the Warfield in San Francisco at the end of the month, I'm looking forward to that.

I was late again sunday, and only caught the last two songs from Ramesses, but that doesn't really bother me. Didn't sound like music I would've enjoyed for an entire evening anyway.

I went to the second day of the Easter festival at Jacobiberg today. Jacobiberg is a place that rents out rehearsal space to bands, and twice a year, a selection of the bands that rehearse there perform. 45 minute sets, one right after the other, on two stages. Everyone who's anyone in the local music scene is there. I caught five of the acts, two of which I had seen before (Merinde and With Ice). Merinde was good, as I expected she'd be, and With Ice was mediocre, as always. The three other acts were moderately entertaining, but good music isn't the point of the festival anyway, so noone was disappointed. Did get to see a lot of familiar faces, and a lot of very pretty girls. And no, I didn't pull. Wouldn't be writing this right now if I had.

Getting this up-to-date again:

april 25th: a bunch of reggae sound systems. Not really my idea of a fun evening.

april 29th: Italian bluesrock group Fleurs du Mal, quite nice, but not spectacular.

may 8th: punk/psychobilly: Bates Motel, The Sausage Party, Dead Elvis and his One Man Grave, Sunnpimp. Dead Elvis was awesome.

may 10th: psychobilly: Monolith Monsters, Sick Sick Sinners. Rock'n'Roll!

ETA: I forgot about april 19th: Mary Had A Little Band. I went along as a roadie.

ETA2: and may 10th, in the evening: Nachtschade (Night Shade), a new local indie/folk/rock duo, and De Zondagsband (The Sunday Band), another local band, making improvisational music.

I go to a couple concerts every summer. Not as many as I'd like though.
We danced.

Concerts since may 10th:

Friday may 22nd: Lavalu, a local acid jazz group, and Miriam Moczko, a jazzy singer-songwriter

Friday may 29th: Lo-Lite, Tiger String Ensemble, lo-fi blues

Coming up:

Sunday june 21st: Tinez Roots Club, deep funk

Friday june 26st: Bandito, stoner rock

Last month was a bit heavy on dance events. I hope there will be more interesting gigs coming up.

I only have time to see the local pub acts, which, as pub acts tend to be, "rock" cover bands. (still better than nothing) and about 1 per week.

But there is a blues festival in my home town every year, which I should make.

I saw it a couple of years back when they first revived it - very very good indeed. They even wheeled out Justin Hayward and he still has the hair!
